Houston sports is depressing, except the two lone championships the Rockets have. Even so they've had their fair share of bad luck with injuries to Ralph Sampson, Yao, Tmac and even Rudy T to some extent.
Yep, I said it earlier... if there was such a thing as a city's football DNA, and regardless of which team played here they would all encompass the same essential building blocks that make teams what they are... Houston (and the old Oilers, and current Texans) would be the perfect example of it. The only thing missing from the Texans is longevity... which will come eventually.
sooo... the Jeff Alm rumors. Can anyone confirm or deny? I always heard a story from someone who knew someone who knew the insurance person handling the claim's uncle that knew the coroner. And each person told something different. I always figured it was just a dumb urban legend, but always wondered if there was any truth to it.
I still maintain that 91 was the worst. That one was so quick. The other 2, you could just see them coming.
Very true, but as soon as it was 35-17, you KNEW what was coming (if you were a seasoned Oiler fan...). That's my point. You had a quarter and a half to mentally prepare for the inevitable. In 91, we only had 2 minutes to prepare.
Finished watching it this morning with my son. He said it reminded him of the Colts game last year...Matthews' statement that it was all a "house of cards" waiting to fall down was exactly what he felt about the Texans after they didn't bother to show up for a game at Indy that had playoff implications. He said from that point forward, he stopped believing in the Texans. Interesting to see him go through this same stuff as a kid with the Texans that I went through growing up with the Oilers.
And then there's this..which is exactly right. Your life is pretty blessed if the Oilers' playoff losses are among your greatest lifetime tragedies.
I certainly agree with you when it was 35-17 you knew it was over. When Buffalo scored to make it 35-17 I told my wife the Bills were going to win and she thought I was crazy.
Ha ha, you knew because you were one of those seasoned Oiler fans I mentioned in my post. Another thing about the 91 team is that there was no precedence for the collapse. For the Bills game, we had the Broncos game as precedence and for the Chiefs game, we had both the Broncos and Bills games as precedence. Also remember that Elway converted two 4th downs on that last drive. GUT WRENCHING.
Elway rolls out and runs toward the line...Richard Johnson comes up...Elway floats it over his head for that long completion. MadMax faints
Plus, the Buffalo comeback developed over, essentially, 1.5 quarters, so the inevitability had time to sink in. The '91 Denver game... I mean, it was 4th and 20-something, fercrisasakes, with, like, mere minutes left. They had that one in the bag. I remember being nervous for 4 straight quarters against KC; by then, we were on to them. But that '93 team... as crazy as it was, was soooooooooooo good. Cowboys/Oilers Super Bowl - we were so close. So close... and yet...............
Did you miss my Richard Johnson post earlier? There are players - mostly scrub - who the mere mention of recalls Vietnam-like memories: Walt Weiss, Ian Howfield... Richard Johnson.
No we don't have to "love it." Spoiler <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/4zFYwferLVQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
