I Just think having an excellent coach and an excellent GM working together can maximize the success of the team. The Morey/Adelman combo achieved excellent results despite having their star players riddled with significant injuries one after another.

Now we finally have a healthy team with young but talented and smart players.

Mchale was an excellent player like Isaiah Thomas but he is not very cerebral as shown by his pattern of decision making as coach/gm of timberwolves. You have to strive for excellence if you want that championship.

Oh and while we're taking a walk down Memory Lane, let's be smart bunnies and remember the wins as well as the losses.

"And with the 5th pick of the 1995 NBA draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select . . . Kevin Garnett." Hall of Famer picks future Hall of Famer: imagine that.

    He just isnt.

He's a HOF player that has love for bball, but is MUCH better suited as a TV analyst.

    Dude was great on NBATV.

His style of coaching is hard-nose, old school which is cool, but his chess playing (rotation choices) is SEVERELY lacking!

He's a good interview and will give you that sound bite....but so what!

I've always viewed him as a stop gap hire, personally.....not sure why they didn't just bring in a young mind/new blood but whatever......we'll see.

He's like Magic when he was coaching or Jordan and Isaiah as GM's......great, great players....horrible team building/basketball minds.

Let's break down Tony Sullivan's thoughts:

I don't know what's "vicious" in any of the details he gives.

Marbury over Allen: "At the time this took place, there was no outrage over the move, and it was generally accepted."

Departure of Chauncey Billups: The Lakers let Shaq walk, Dallas let Nash walk, but whatever. The idea is that if Billups had stayed, the T'wolves would have won a championship in 2004. Well, they did go to the Western Conference Finals that year. . . . 2nd in the west is pretty damn good.

Drafting of Ndudi Ebi: the writer wishes McHale had picked "Leandro Barbosa, Josh Howard, Luke Walton, or Mo Williams" instead. Surely Kevin Garnett in 1995 was a better choice than all of those put together in 2003. No one is impressed by the selection of Kevin Garnett at #5? The Ndudi Ebi thing is more important to you. . . .

The firing of Flip Saunders: Which team is he coaching now? (None.)

The firing of Dwane Casey: Oh, you want the Raptors' coach. . . .

Trading Brandon Roy: Sorry, who does he play for now?

We have an excellent General Manager who has acquired excellent players with the analytics approach. If our excellent General Manager had stuck to his method in hiring an excellent coach (using statistics) or retained the hall of fame coach we already had in adelman then this rocket ship would have been ready to launch. Excellent GM, Excellent Players, Mediocre coach. Houston, we have a problem.

Kevin Garnett became Kevin Garnett on the T'wolves during the McHale era, and if you dispute that, there's no use even talking about basketball with you.

Yeah yeah, Morey is excellent in everything except the stuff you say he's not excellent in. We get it. Tweet him your ideas. He'll be really excited.

He wanted to be surrounded by good players. These players could've been acquired/retained by the Timberwolves in their prime: Chauncey Billups, Ray Allen. they missed out on the two and depending on draft position these are the players drafted vs. the players still on the board: ebi/josh howard; mccants/granger randy foye/brandon roy.

Kevin Garnett became Kevin Garnett because he's Kevin Garnett. He was traded to the Celtics after the GM/coach failed to surround him with good players.

As much as I disapprove of McSuccess, I've got to defend him right there:

    (1) It's a tautology
    (2) Kevin Garnett is what he is today because of the mentoring of McHale, he has himself admitted as much many times. If there is something McSuccess is really legit at , it's developing promising big men, hence why I think he may be of great help to T-Rob (not to DMo as he just lack the physical tools at the moment).

    It really isn't that hard.

Most of our rotational players have further developed this season. The Rockets are winning more than expected. The players play hard and praise him.

Sounds like McHale had done a solid job.

I'm still on the first page reading the comments actually, but this is one of the best response analysis I have seen of this situation on Clutchfans imho.

    Would rep if I could.

To review: as GM of the T'Wolves, McHale drafted Kevin Garnett out of high school at #5. He assembled a team around Garnett that went to the Western Conference Finals. A dude from Minnesota is not impressed by that. Neither are some Rockets fans. I will be delighted if we make it to the Western Conference Finals. If you want to say we can't mix GM performance with coach performance, blame OP and Minnesota guy for doing it, not me.
