True, but that's not the point. The point is that Yates is going to be the backup next year, so you need a 3rd guy. I really like Russell Wilson.
Matt Leinart is the 3rd QB he signed a 2 year contract. We have to many needs to go for a QB early on.
Definitely an early pick. He will be the first WR taken. He's just as good if not better than Julio Jones. If the Texans would trade up and get him...
OH MY TEBOW, i saw the entire OSU and Stanford game and Blackmon is a straight boss... If we trade up for this kid, i have absolutely no objections
I was watching Alshon Jeffery highlights. The dude looks solid. I seriously doubt we could trade up to get Blackmon, but I think that Jeffery is our best bet late in the draft.
Mike Lombardi was saying on the BS report that you shouldn't draft WRs because they are too hard to evaluate (coverage schemes and corners they face are nothing like NFL). He recommends just signing free agents ala undrafted Victor Cruz.
Wow, Blackmon really impressed me, likely the best receiver in the draft. Doubt we can get him without some trading. He has vacuums for hands, speed, big, everything. Who are the Baylor receivers ?
Blackmon is top 5 now after that performance - Texans would never pay such a steep price imo. Dream scenario would be to pick up Dwayne Bowe in free agency so we can draft for other needs.
Agreed that the Texans would never pay a Julio Jones price for Blackmon but if he falls into the 7-10 range I hope they make a play on him. Bowe is pure pipedream. The Texans have to worry about resigning both Mario and Arian much less signing a big-name FA.
I've been hoping Alshon Jeffery falls to us. Hes got the size and hands to fit in here. He's got some nice open field moved, too, but you don't need that as much with Schaub as your QB. Just need to be able to catch in traffic.
There is always the option to simply let Mario walk and open up another $16MM in cap space to shore up some holes. Outside of that you still have players like Leinhart, Walter and Jacoby you can let go to uprage the positon. Bowe to me should be target #1 this offseason. The guy is special. If Jeffrey falls into your lap, you still draft him regardless.
WR talent can be easily had in rounds 2-4 so I don't think you have to take one in the 1st round. I think the Texans are in a position to draft the best available talent there. I've mentioned him before, but Criner could be a quality WR had late in the draft. He plays faster than his 40, has real good size, is physical, great hands and always made big plays at Arizona.
just to quote some numbers for comparable talent to Bowe Roddy White made $4MM last year - 7 yrs exp. Anquan Boldin made $6MM last year - 9 yrs exp. would a starting salary of $5-6MM seem reasonable for Bowe? Mario Williams made $13.8MM last year. Walter/Jacoby both makes ~$3MM a year...and another $2.5MM for Leinart. We are talking close to $23MM in available cap room, before we pay Arian. to say that Bowe is a pipedream in an offseason where you have the WRs below also coming up for FA is a little much. Wes Welker DeSean Jackson Vincent Jackson Stevie Johnson Reggie Wayne Pierre Garcon Marques Colston Brandon Lloyd Plaxico Burress
That's what I was thinking 9 months ago. But this is the second straight year that had Johnson struggling because of injuries (last season was a nagging ankle). Jacoby's play is wretched. Walter is only effective when a deep threat has stretched open soft spots underneath. We've got to find a speedfreak to put opposite him. We're at #26, low enough that I wouldn't wait until the second round to find talent. This draft doesn't seem to have deep WR selection. Almost every other position for is a depth pick, anyway. Walter Football has: Michael Floyd going #15 Alshon Jeffery going #21 Kendall Wright going #23 Mohamed Sanu to us at #26 Nick Toon going #50 (2nd, 18) Dwight Jones going #63 (2nd, 31) And our taking NT Josh Chapman in the 2nd round.
