That was my first thought. Are you sure this guy was a real cop? Also, can't you "just" go down to the DMV and get another license?
Well, was the car he was driving a cop car? or, was it a SUV with a light? or, worse yet, was it a mall cop?
Yea...he's a d**k now. Just kidding. I thought he worked at a prison as a guard? If he's a true cop, then I need to get pulled over in Austin so I can get off the hook for once given he will let me off.
Just an update for everyone. First of all, its not a scam and its actually a common act here in IL for the authority to hold onto your driver license(not suspend them) for any kind of traffic violation, minor or not, ONLY if they picked the option for you to appear in court, where then you can retrieve your license. The cop had a choice to either fine me or for me to go to court, all depending on the typ of violation. The ticket he gave to me will be my temp. driver's license. I was pulled over for not having a front plate, but the main reason why I had to appear in court was b/c I didn't present an up to date auto insurance at that time and that he just gave me a verbal warning on the plate. The cop gave me order to go see a judge in court and show him proof that I do have a vaild insurance, and in return he will give back my license. The reason why I started a thread on this was to see if there's anyway to get back my license earlier, before my court date so that I would have some kind of photo identification for my recent business trip. I went to the DMV before my trip and they said it was not possible to get me my license in any way until my court date. So instead, they've issued me a state ID and ask me to get a passport at the post-office. Hope that clears things up....
So, in essence, it sounds like the officer did his job. It appears he did not ticket you for not having a front plate and he pulled your license because you couldn't prove you had insurance. As an aside, my insurance company sends me two ID cards. I keep one in my wallet and one in my car so I always have proof. My wife does the same, so if we are ever pulled over in either of our two cars, the info is in the glove compartment.
That's a weird law. You're not allowed to drive without a license, but the cop takes your license and let's you drive home? And how does he expect you to get to court?
Thank God I'm from Texas With that said, I have my insurance company in my cell phone because I can never remember to keep an up-to-date copy of my insurance card.
