A passport IS a photo ID and it is MORE valid than a DL. Passports are issued by the federal government and are not only valid everywhere in the U.S. but worldwide. Anybody can get a DL but you have to be a proven US citizen to get a passport.

In fact, you can use a passport as valid ID to attain a DL but you can't use a DL to obtain a passport.

dude, this just doesn't add up. i've been pulled over twice where i didn't have a valid insurance card in the car. the cop simply gave me a ticket. i showed up in court, showed the judge my valid insurance and was on my merry way.

yeah, can use the passport as ID anywhere that a DL would have been accepted. So you should be fine w/that as long as it's not expired..

If you have a passport it is more then a valid form of ID... I have a buddy who got a DUI and he walks around with his passport and uses it for all kinds of things, including getting into clubs/bars....... lol.

The guy who taught at my five hour course told us that we should always keep a 20 or a 100 dollar bill in our glove box for a situation like this. Whether it's legal or not, I don't know, but this guy was an official teacher. He said that most cops will be happy letting you off with a warning if you slip them a 20.

Oh...so your the maturity police now? Who cares? I don't like cops. Every cop I have ever run into has ended badly for me. I've gotten tickets for stuff I didn't do and I've gotten a lot of attitude from cops that I didn't deserve. I have yet to come across a cop without a chip on his shoulder who doesn't fit that equation. In all fairness to me, cops don't do their job to be liked so labeling them shouldn't be a problem.

Somewhere out there, Another Brother is offended.

I've seen some really horrible cops that have HUGE chips on their shoulders (one almost arrested a kid because he spit on the ground...), but I've also came across a few really really nice cops.

My car once ran out of gas, and I didn't know what to do. I ran from the scene to go get someone, and didn't even put on my 4 ways or anything. When I came back, there was a cop car there, and I was suredly going to get a ticket. Instead, this cop realized I was young and pitifully stupid, so he just explained what I should have done, and called a tow truck for me. He told me the tow truck would cost about 200 bucks or so. Then, realizing I shouldn't have called the tow because I could push the car to a safe spot (it stalled in a turn lane...lol) and get gas, the cop actually got out and helped me PUSH the car to a good parking spot. Because of this, I avoided the towing fee (something I definitely didn't have), and got off squeaky clean. That was the coolest cop ever.

if there's someone to hate, it's freakin' tow truck drivers. i can't stand the crap they pull. they aren't regulated so they can charge up the ass.

I congratulate you on running into a cool cop. I hope to run into one some day. I just hope I don't run into one who wants to take my driver's license because my inspection is expired and/or my insurance isn't up-to-date. And, if it is the cop's discretion on whether he wants to take my driver's license in the face of such violations, then I can probably guarantee you that he is going to take mine rather than leave it with me. I would assume(could be wrong) that the cop in this case didn't have to take this poster's drivers license. Could he have done it to make his life a little more difficult?

Dude, I think you got scammed. Better go check your credit report.

I'm pretty sure there's no way a cop can take your license from you because of a traffic violation, even if it's a DUI. It's the courts that can do that. And for not having insurance, that happens if you've committed a second offense, and you have to be found guilty by a judge first.

Try to salvage what's left of your identity while you still can, because it looks like you got ripped off big time.

Don't we have a few lawyers on this board? Can anyone verify as to whether or not a cop can just hold your DL regardless of the offense?

get the officers name and call the precinct, tell them you have a flight coming up and you cant wait until the court date. tell them you have to take care of this situation today and that you wont accept anything less than getting your license back...

raise a little hell and make your situation seem legitimite, yet urgent
