Biggest difference: Hayes knows how to play the game at an NBA level. Dorsey does not, and maybe never will.
Dorsey has played 2 games; Chuck has played multiple seasons. I don't think it's a fair comparison at all, considering that we have yet to see what Dorsey can do against ELITE players.
Per Draftexpress from the pre-draft camp numbers: Chuck Hayes - height w shoes 6'6.75; wingspan 6'10; standing reach 8'8.5; Joey Dorsey - height w shoes 6'7.25; wingspan 7'1.25; standing reach 8'11; So yes, although their heights are similar, Dorsey appears much bigger on TV and his effective height is taller because of his long arms. With a 3in advantage on Hayes in wingspan, he's much more suited to be a longterm backup center than Hayes is.
Or rather his body type is. Whatever is left in his head after 4yrs of "coaching" from Calipari might not have enough time to grow back before his last (and first) NBA team dumps him.
Chuck is a much better defender in the low post than Dorsey. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JPwC8I7xLic&hl=en_US&fs=1&start=186"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JPwC8I7xLic&hl=en_US&fs=1&start=186" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
This is a horrible comparison. I think we need a real big man(taller than 6'9") to replace both players.
oh, and fwiw, I'm happy that Dorsey has played well enough to get DA off the court. He's been horrible for most of the season and I hope he's not back next year.
Dorsey is a C, but Hayes is a PF. Dorsey is a post presence, but Hayes is not a one. What the rockets need is a C. We have enough good PFs (Landry & Scola) already. I think if Dorsey can play consistently well in next 5 games, the rockets should start him at C.
I agree with everything other than help defense. Although Hayes does not block shots regularly, he stops the penetration by being at the right place at the right time.
And also the question of Dorsey's work ethic, which is alarming. I don't believe that would change in a snap. At this point, Dorsey showed some promise and if, a big if, he works hard on his game, I see no reason why he can't fit himself into Ben Wallace's game. But OTOH, he might be lucky to turn out to be a Cato.
I just don't understand why people question Dorsey's work ethic. Dorsey led rebounds in summer league and 2nd in nbadl. From what I saw his recent two nba games, he has improved a lot (btw, I am very impressed by his passing ability). I don't think a player who lacks of work ethic can make that big progress.
