    Reminds me of that phrase...

The sum of the *team* is greater than the individual parts. :D

And I have a problem with pompous and pedantic know-it-alls who think they can put other people down when in fact THEY'RE WRONG. Someone who watched Wednesday's game would know that of Yao's 6 freethrows, only 2 were awarded for being fouled in the act of shooting; the other 4 were taken after he was fouled jostling for position away from the ball when the Clippers were already in the penalty. Yao never touched the ball on those occasions and he never took shots. This is not to launch another debate as to whether Yao had enough touches or took enough shots in that game, but simply to point out A FACT to this genius who thinks he can derogate other people's basketball IQ as being a negative number.

Okay, I see what you're saying, but then I would have to disagree with your argument because of the fallacious use of false analogy. You can't compare the Yao-ONly fan issue to race. Because Yao-Only fans are not a race. If anything, Yao-Only fans are more like the mafia. Perhaps you should use an analogy about generalizing about the mafia to get your point across.

Well, RIET, sorry to say, but if this is correct, it makes you look pretty condescending (considering the tone of your post) without a real base for it.

I was speaking more of the notion people implies around here in using that term, rather than the grammar. But heck, if we can dissolve all the bicking by changing the word ordering, I'm all for it.

    Rest in peace YOF,

    ....

    and here comes OYF, LOL

    tannersearle78,

I'm so glad you made this point b/c I was just about to too. Not coincidentally many debates btw YOF/OYF/FOY and the anti-OFYs get hypercharged with these undertones of racism-related indignance. I have no clue as to what the nationality of YOFs happen to be, but in some instances, I think I can make an educated guess. But it's a scary thought to me when genuine nationalistic pride morphs into this "you're either with me or against me" kind of attitude... whereby unless with we agree with the YOF camp, we're their enemies by default b/c we somehow contribute to the r****dation of Yao's growth/success.

That's just IMHO. But I definitely do sense a whole lot of indignance by some YOF fans that simply isn't related to merely being labelled a YOF.

    :p

This was not meant to be a personal attack, but perhaps your post is actually an example of what MacBeth was trying to say we should avoid?

(if I understood part of the essence of thousands and thousands of words correctly)

Well, it's not really a race issue. But the way someone talked about time-zone and all that stuff in hurling out the YOF term, I think Yun has legitimate grievance.

A very good point. There is no such a thing, but there are some no basket knowleage Rox fans simply because Yao is in the team. If somebody does not like them, do not response them.

This is precisely why I am against MacBeth's efforts to curb free speech. In visiting the BBS for as long as I have, I know REIT to be one of the best senior posters out there. It's obvious that REIT has strong feelings/opinions on the matter. And if in that instance of writing inspiration, this is that flows to the keyboard, so be it. Clearly, it's emotionally charged. And that's what makes it very honest and true to heart. Why fault him for that? Only REIT can speak for him/herself on this matter, but I bet my hat that the stuff he writes is neither derogatory nor slanderdous. How does his statements defame or maliciously hurt anybody? It's an opinion that people who disagree are free to respond to. It's not REIT is in hiding. His handle is visible to all.

For some people (and not necessarily REIT), but for some people including YOFs, their handle on the English language, or lack thereof, will perforce make them come across as "less then sensitive," political or not PC. I don't fault people for that. And all the more reason why it's dangerous to place, what I believe to be arbitrary and subjective rules, on being "PC." I frown upon derogatory comments and slander. Indeed I do. But I hardly find REIT's comments derogatory. He's just out to make a point, and I think successfully so.

How has he made a successful point? By calling other people stupid when he has the facts wrong? I don't want to curb his right to call anyone stupid, as long as he doesn't mind when I call him out on his own stupidity.

So MacBeth is saying that he is more sensitive to gas than the average poster? That he will drop dead if people have more brain farts? That he farts a lot?

    Not sure.

Well, respect - it's not often that people will just say that. You now officially have the right to call me out in the worst way next time I make a stupid post (which will probably be the next post I make, and the one after that, etc...).
