For a start, can we all stop using the phrase 'yao-only fan', EVER ??? Please, What's the point of that ??? If you don't agree with someone, argue with him, don't label a group name. Just argue the issue at hand, don't call names. Even 'you are stupid' is WAYyyyyy better than 'you are a stupid yao-only fan'.

" I ceased to be called laddie when I took up the King's Commision...is that clear?" 5 pts for whoever gets this film quote..actually,25 pts. It's a smal line in a great, great film.

solid...I am in no way shape, or form trying to discourage conflict. I am trying to discourage it's lesser cousin, antagonism. It's not disagreements I take issue with, it's labelling, name calling, and the triumph of putting other perspectives down over expressing one's own. It's not even incivility, which isn't, I think that much of a problem, anyways, well handled by the Admins. It's about this entrenchment of position, and the resulting atrophy of intelligent discussion on any subject revolving around Yao, Steve, or Cat. I go too far, it's not altogether stagnant, just stilted.

even 'you are a f********* idiot' is more intelligent than saying 'you are a stupid yao-only fan'.

I will not use that phrase from today on, it only makes more people join the fight.

Smeg, andy, yip, etc. Thanks for understanding. I know it's not as bleak as I paint it, if only because some of you guys are out there. That some people are resolving to never use certain lables whose purpose is to stop, rather than further discussion and understanding is already a sign of progress.

I should have emphasized that more...labels. What possible positive result can come from dismissing people as Yao Only, or Steve Apologists, etc. If you think about it, the only things they promote are division and negativity.

"Yao-only fan" is a term that's being labled upon people as freely as people throw around "unpatriotic" nowadays. It's not always fair, and often not right, but that doesn't mean these people don't exist. There ARE Yao-only fans out there. Although being one doesn't mean one is inherently stupid because of it. Nor does it mean that their opinion doesn't matter. But they often have completely different agendas and goals for the team than some others.

But creating threads to bash a group of people for no particular reason is crossing the line, even if they're not liked very much. The best thing to do is just ignore the people. And it's hard sometimes, but oh well. I hadn't ever put anyone on ignore until after the Dallas game, and ever since then I've been giving the list quite the workout.

Have you ever argued with a child? You can't because it's pointless. You're looking at things from 2 completely different vantage points.

    Same thing here.

Most Yao only fans have the basketball IQ of -20. They know very little about NBA basketball. They may pick up a little here and there and then use it to come to a nonsensical conclusion.

    Example:

"WNBA" complaining that Yao has only taken 6 shots.

Explanation: He's also taken 6 FT's (fouls in the act of shooting) which are the equivalent of 3 FG attempts.

    Then you get this genius:

    yipengzhao
"Whoa there, that's news to me. Since when do FT's equal 1/2 a shot attempt. Missed FG when fouled is like a walk in baseball dude... don't be hatin".

Uh yes but if youre looking at whether a player is getting FG opportunities, FT's are a consideration. So for example if Shaq is fouled 30 times in the act of shooting and he gets 15 FT's, he still has 0 official FG's. However, he is still getting shot opportunties.

The fact you even have to explain these things makes it unbearable.

I don't have a problem with someone being a Yao only fan. My problem is the majority of them have 0 understanding of basketball which makes it tough in a basketball bbs.

Hey MacBeth, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that our posts and threads on this board start out as good basketball conversations, but no matter the original intention of the thread, it boils down into a fight about Yao vs. Steve. Which brings me to my next point: Steve!!!!! just kidding.

I don't think there's a way around it right now because the conversations on this board somewhat reflect the roster turmoil of the actual Rockets team, so a lot of discussions will have some aspect of Steve vs. Yao, or more fittingly old style vs. new style.

Another factor is that the Rockets are gaining respect & popularity, so with more buzz will come more basketball-uneducated fans. These additional fans don't know much else to say than the unoriginal Yao!/Steve! or TradeEveryone! so we'll see more than the normal share of that stuff on the board.

Solution? How can we find a way to keep threads from degenerating? Very difficult to say. Maybe it will end/lessen when current team roles are much more solidified and the BBS changes accordingly. Another option is for the better posters to simply ignore/skim past the thread-wasting posts and post normally, in order to maintain the integrity of the basketball conversation.

They aren't dismissed, their opinions are argued against based on what they say down to every syllable. The "yao only" is thrown in mercifully because it is better to be that than just a moron.:p

Seriously though, Sam Fisher, myself, Franchiseblade, we don't just dismiss the opinions, we try to get them to explain why "steve francis suks," or why they start threads under false premises like the "Can Cat and Yao Coexist" thread.

    http://bbs.clutchcity.net/php3/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68821

Read the first post. That is a perfect example of what a "yao only" fan is. His reasons for starting that thread, the backbone of his argument as it were, turn out to be false. I try and get that guy and others to prove the statements attributed to Mobley were true. They wouldn't budge, telling me to do the research. Of course, it turns out that the premises were indeed false and now we have a huge thread that didn't even need to exist.

Jag, I think you know full well what I'm up against, think about how things degenerate when you try and prove a point in the D&D.

, you are labelled a Smith-Only fan, ridiculed and dismissed.

Yes. I often imagine a parallel situation. Say a young American man suddenly emerges as the best...I don't know, cricket player of his age group, and is consequently drafted, signed, or whatever they do with cricket players, in the top cricket league in, say, India. Big story, lots of press, and you're an American, either new to the sport, or new to the Indian League ( ?!!?), and you become enthused by this player's stature and game, and either expand a pre-existing interest in cricket, or find a new one. You then find a site where fans of that player, let's call him Smith, plays. You either overcome the language barrier, struggle with it and a few simple phrases, or find a trasnlating program, and join up at that site. As your initial interest is focused on Smith, that is the subject of many of your subsequent participation in the site, at least intially.

Now suppose that your positions, or inquiries on SMith are met with lots of  , you are labelled a Smith-Only fan, ridiculed and dismissed. Is there anywhere positive to go from there. Maybe your positions were naive, maybe they were too focused on Smith, which would be, I think, understandable. Or maybe your takes were correct..( it's not that long ago when we assumed that Europeans didn't 'get' basketball like we do, and it turns out their fundamentals are better than ours, or at least comparable), whatever...

..either way, where is there to go from the Smith Only label and dismissal. Of course those who remain will get defensive, and from there the situation becomes entrenched.

It's also understandable that Indian fans on that site will grow weary of American fans seeming to care only about how Smith is doing...but would we feel it's cool that all of our opinions are dismissed because we're American. That if we feel that Smith is being misused ( an opinion reflected by most of the Indian cricket press), and say so, we're only saying so because we only care for Smith, and not the Bombay Bombers. I think that taking a minute or two to hear out the American fan, and see if he has merit, or explaining to him, with courtesy, that it's a little grating to have a large gropus only interested in Smith, or simply ignoring those inquiries if they offend tou would serve the entire Bombers site better than calling them all Smith Onlly fans, insulting them, and disimissing them. Don't you?

    I see your point, and think it has some merit...but 3 things;

    1) Too often the middle step, ie trying to talk basketball, is skipped because it's easier to assume that poster X is merely a Yao-Only fan.

    2) Even if they have little understanding of basketball, which applies to some, but not most, IMO, it's easier to try and educate or ignore, rather than insult and label.

    3) I think that, even among North Americans,we often assume that a person who disagrees with us about a subject does so because he knows nothing. This pattern could be even more common here.

1st...Absolut..nice post. I didn't have more than that to say, so I saved space and included it here.

2nd. I agree there are fans who seem to care only about Yao. I agree that some of them can be annoying. But the same can be said of other fans. What I disagree with is the use of labels, and the broadness of the brush with which they are applied...which, when you use labels in the 1st place, becomes inevitible. As it's so much easier to group and dismiss those who disagree with us, it's bound to happen once it becomes accepted behaviour. In here, Yao Only, or reavtions to same have become accepted, and it's dragging the quality down.

    MacB,

It's great to see you identified the problem & addressed the issue in this thread. Personally, I think it's still a far reach for most people to stop the labelling & negativity all at once. However, I don't think it's impossible for implementing these concepts in threads started by yourself. There are a few things I think you & others sharing the same sentiment can do & have some control on:

    1) Specify some rules & guidelines you would like the participants to follow in the starting post of all your threads. such as:

    - Labelling, name calling is not allowing in this thread
    - Free posts with no-substance such as "Not another longwinded post again!", "Why no one calling MacB a Yao-only fan?" ...etc are not allowed in this thread
    - This thread is only for posts showing intelligence, legitimacy, or objectivity, as opposed to just intelligence

    2) Those who don't follow these guidelines will be ignored & won't deserve a response from you/other posters in your thread.

    3) Those who constantly violated the rules in your threads will made your ignore list permanently & will also be despised by other members.

    ------

I'm sure for those who respected you as a good poster here will follow these guidelines in your thread, if not the other threads.

If you set a good example in your own thread, I'm sure all the other good posters will also follow these guidelines in other threads & improve the overall quality of the GARM.

    1. Most posters are fairly reasonable. You don't get an Oxbow Incident-ish crowd if you're making sense. The majority of my basketball posts deal with Yao because he's just a better basketball player than Steve or Cat. However, people don't jump on me because I know what Im talking about and it's evident in my posts.

    2. I would agree with you except oftentimes, the Yao only fans are not polite. They continue to post worthless threads or make asinine comments that are prima facie stupid. They live in some alternate NBA universe where lateral quickness doesn't matter and only height is important.

    3. I don't care if a person disagrees with me if they know what they're talking about. These people don't. The definition of a Yao only fan extends beyond Yao. They are Yao only basketball fans. Their perfunctory knowledge of basketball is annoying. You can't ignore it because of the volume.

It's like me talking about soccer because suddenly Hakeem joined the Senior Eurpoean Soccer League. If Ive never been a soccer fan in my life, how the heck can I make cogent arguments?

    Absurd.

    There is no Yao-only fan,

It is an unfair term coined by some members who still fail to understand that Steve and Cat dribbled too much (although i think they are improved under JVG and have supported them) and fail to use Yao to the fullest extent in JVG's system. These members label many many other members who are only pointing out the obvious (and as noted by many sportswriters across the country ever since last season). The feel that anyone with a slight againt francis or cat must only be a Yao only fan...

so i ask, who started the hating and segregation of this site first? As JAG has said, who cares if the case may be that there are people who liked the rockets because of Yao? It doesn't make them any less of a fan...It makes Houston bigger and puts us on the map
