yeah, that's why i'm getting these 4 star - 5 star threads. everyone remembers these exciting macalu threads...(crickets singing)
Why do so many people see a problem in looking at some history once in awhile? This isn't just a present/future Rockets forum. I've learned so much (and continue to) about the history of the Houston Rockets from threads like this one. Whether or not Cartwright tried to injure Hakeem is unknown, however, I've been playing competitive basketball for close to 10 years and it is rare to accidentally elbow someone in the head. Come on, if you play basketball competitively, you know how elbowing works (very rarely incidental).
its informative thread. you know that kind that macalu really hates and always posts on. heypartner and i were talking in denver and he mentioned this incident. i found it to be a very important topic in the bulls/rockets showdowns. i'm happy he mentioned it!
I remember seeing Olajuwon lying on the floor after this happened. I wish Maxwell would've beat Cartwright's sorry ass for that elbow. I was so worried about Dream and the fate of the Rockets. The Bulls were just a bunch of scared biatches. Great thread tinman. Please continue educating folks around here. 5 stars!

Its quite simple, tinman haters, if you don't like the history lesson, stay off the thread. Honestly, I admire and respect tinman's passion for the Rockets, and I am pretty sure the rest of the board does too. If someone is ignorant enough to believe that mentioning this incident reignites an old rivalry, they need to reevaluate the situation. That incident is in the past and it did happen. What resulted from it is very important to know and understand. To take the emotions from that era and bring them to present day is like calling out the old Axis of Evil for their past wrongs. The point remains, tinman is an ASSET to this board and being that this is a HOUSTON ROCKETS BBS, his perspectives can and should be conveyed. Keep on keeping on, tinman
I like this thread. I think some of the younger fans might be interested in learning more about Hakeem other than he won 2 Championships and did fancy moves on D. Robinson in the playoffs one year. I remember this injury and Cartwright did step on Hakeem's head after he fell down. If it was not intentional Cartwright certainly didn't feel a bit bad about it as it occurred. Nice change of pace for the forum to talk about a little history.
thanks for the encouragement! if people dig through the personal insults to me by the usual tinman stalkers, i hope they find something new from this about the Rockets. these haters don't give you anything to make you a better Rockets fan. they are the biggest losers cause they are on a board about the Rockets and they don't care about them. they just go on like lemmings to read what i say and get all mad about it. suckers! cause if they really do hate my threads, they would never even post on them..
i never knew you loved it when crickets sing. its so peaceful, like nature's message to the world of peace and joy.
Im with tinman, he just teaching rockets history, he is teaching the facts that a lot of people didnt know. so tinman, is this injury that causes that olajuwon wears glasses some years, or its because something else??
yes, he wore goggles because of that.. its in the HAKEEM ENCYCLOPEDIA http://www.nba.com/rockets/hakeem_tribute/hakeem_encyclopediaCD.html C Cartwright, Bill - Chicago Bulls center from 1988-94. Fractured Hakeem's right orbit, the bone structure that houses the eye, with an inadvertent elbow on Jan. 3, 1991. Hakeem made his return to the Rockets lineup Feb. 28, 1991 wearing goggles. He actually tried to wear goggles in a game against Orlando earlier that year, but took them off in the first quarter because they were uncomfortable. Charles, Lorenzo - North Carolina State forward who caught Derrick Whittenburg's wayward shot and dunked it at the buzzer to give the Wolfpack the 1983 NCAA championship over Hakeem's heavily-favored Houston Cougars. Choke City - Three days after blowing an 18-point lead and losing Game 1 of the 1994 Western Conference Semifinals to the Phoenix Suns, the Rockets lost a 20-point fourth-quarter lead and Game 2. The next day the Houston Chronicle renamed Houston "Choke City." "We traveled directly to Phoenix after the game," Olajuwon said. "That was a terrible flight. It was silent on the plane, as if somebody had died. Nobody was prepared for what had happened." Citizen - A 33-year-old Hakeem became a U.S. citizen April 2, 1993. "It's natural for me," Olajuwon said. "I've lived here 16 years and my home is in Houston. Half of my family is in the United States, half of my family is in Nigeria. I am still a Nigerian. You can't change that." Clutch City - The Rockets said good-bye to their home-court advantage in the 1994 Western Conference Semifinals against the Phoenix Suns by losing two large leads in Games 1 and 2. Hakeem Olajuwon believed they lost something else; pressure. In a speech to his teammates prior to Game 3, Olajuwon pointed out the Rockets had nothing to lose. "The pressure is now on Phoenix, it is not on us anymore," he said. "They took that pressure away when they came in and won two games. Now everybody expects them to win, so if we go and put our effort into winning the first game here in Phoenix that puts all the pressure back on them." The Rockets went on to win the next two games on the Suns' home floor and eventually the series, as Olajuwon's 37 points and 17 rebounds led Houston to a 104-94 Game 7 win and a berth in the Western Conference Finals against Utah.
The 1990-91 Rockets, despite Olajuwon missing 25 games with that eye injury, compiled a then franchise record 52-30, which was good for a sixth seed in the Western Conference that season, but were swept in the first round by the Lakers. Yes, Olajuwon did play in that first-round series. Also, for that season, then Rockets' head coach Don Chaney was named NBA's Coach of the Year.
I was at that game.We were sitting behind the basket where it happened, mid way back...Big Bill Cartwright and his sharp elbows! Such a long history with this guy. ....blowout of the orbital socket if I recall correctly. I will say this...Bill use to do those public service jobs against child abuse among other things......Good man.Although the way he would puff out his chest and say "Do I make you nervous ?" would always have my buddies and I thinkin the same thing..."your elbows do." Anyway,I rememnber the electric atmosphere in the Summit that night, a regular occurence when MJ came to town. And it wasn't just when Mike came in.The Summit rocked regularly.I miss it. Hey tinman, remember the night Worthy came in and we gave him a standing O after getting busted for solicitation? Classic stuff!I believe he and Magic were together. .....or the Chicken Man going off for his career high 48?
