Even if UT does offer him that much, there's no promise he'd even entertain it. Sumlin made that mistake and he's about to be back to square one trying to rebuild his reputation as a head coach after A&M fires him. He's got it good where he's at, and he's at a program that could absolutely take off with a bit of consistent success. Why throw all of that away to potentially be the next Charlie Strong at UT?
you guys just beat FSU, the Program. the timing is right. I'm sure Texas is not the only program who wants him. I'm totally surprised USC didn't throw him Pete Carol money or Georgia. Especially Georgia, since their coach got fired cause they can't beat Alabama.
Great win boyz! Houston is on the map! Congrats to Greg Ward, who for the most part nobody believed could lead a team at QB, let alone take the team to the biggest bowl win in team history. He did it! And he did it his way! Kudos to the Wide Receivers for making plays all night long. Nothing spectacular or deep, but they made incredibly tough catches to keep drives alive. Defense was outstanding. They obliterated the Seminoles. Masterminded the FSU running attack and checked down a decent QB and WR for much of the game. They did not waiver. They demanded respect and earned it. Think the biggest moment was Postma coming in and fighting for the first down. Then blowing one out to the goal line. Overall total domination of the Seminoles. I think if the Committee selects the final rankings, they have every reason to bump Houston into the top 10 now. If they just lay down like during championship week, then we'll move up a few slots and that'll be that. But won't matter, we get Oklahoma next year. Losing a few key players for sure, on Defense, so next year a question mark, but I like our chances with a healthy Ward to run the table. Big Game. Big Win. Whole country watching us. Go Cougars!
Herman had one good year at UH in his first head coaching job. They hadn't beat FSU yet. This is why nobody threw ridiculous money at him. If they roll through the schedule next year, it will be very difficult for UH to keep him. Mark September 3rd, 2016 on your calendar. I will be at NRG!
Feel like you're just trolling but bored so I'll bite. But what makes people actually think Herman is any different from Meyer, Saban, Kelly, or any coach that wants to keep moving up and win a NC. What make Herman so different from every coach that has made a similar move?
My point is, why can't he want to win a NC where he's at? I mean, it would be a much bigger accomplishment, and given that there are tons of great recruits in the local area and a potentially huge fanbase if the product ever becomes worthy of it. College football programs rise and fall, there's no reason why UH can't be on the rise giving him no reason to want to go elsewhere. We know he's not a w**** like Sumlin given that he took less money than they offered him in order to give back to the program, something Sumlin would NEVER have done. Also given that he has language in his contract related to improving facilities, it stands to reason that he's more interested in building this program up rather than hopping to an already established program like so many others have.
Peach Bowl rated a 4.0 Up 21% from last year One of the only NY6 bowl games to actually improve its numbers this season (if not avoid a dramatic decline) Way to go, Coogs!
Well, we can all agreed that the University if Houston has a big time coach, in Tom Herman . Go Colts, best football team in Texas.
Again why post it here instead of a UT thread? You also posted "you couldn't wait for Charlie Strong to hit the recruiting trail"? WHY ARE YOU POSTING THIS ON A UH THREAD!!!!!!!
Look at a guy like coach K at Duke. Duke program was nothing before him. Clearly he has had opportunity to "move up" to traditional powerhouses NC, Kentucky or Kansas as well as pro opportunities. But he chose to stay at Duke and made his reputation there. Maybe Herman is that guy.
Fair points. But that's a lot of big what-ifs for me to swallow that Herman would be that one guy who turned down offers from Texas, Ohio State, or whoever to try to win it all at their current school, all while turning down tens of millions (potentially) along the way. The potential raise in itself would be tough to turn down, let alone one that would land you one of the premier jobs in the country. You could absolutely be right but just can't see it myself. As far as the contract, there are a lot of interesting provisions but most striking to me was the relatively small buyout, which gets reduced if facilities upgrades don't get moving like you said. 2.5M is pretty small in today's contracts. To put into perspective, McElwain had a 7M buyout at Colorado State and Strong had a 4.3M at Louisville. Dont think it matters all that much since schools have been willing to pay them but buyouts are typically a very contentious term when dealing with college football contracts.
Let's say Urban Meyer retires and Ohio State offers Herman the job. I'm going to speculate that 1. he would leave Houston for Ohio State 2. Ohio State could easily buy his contract as well as double his salary Urban Meyer himself left Utah to go to Florida, then Ohio State. He moved on up like the Jeffersons. it's rare for one coach to stay at one place like Joe Paterno or Frank Beemer
For Tom Herman, the key is money. If we want to play with the big boys then we need to spend like the big boys. Tom has to earn it. He has already. Stepping our game up. competing in Recruiting. Generating revenue. It's a huge bump forward. Ultimately, he wants to be paid, but he can earn that. If the U sees the money coming in, they will be more willing to let some go. Secondly he wants to compete. Third he likely needs a stepping stone to the NFL. He can get all of that in Houston if we are in the top 20 consistently. So just take the risk and pay the man and see what happens. There is too much money to be made. And now, there's no risk. We got paid.
Tom's wife had a moment. She got caught at the perfect angle, in the perfect clothing, lighting, and she was in shape. I'd say she is generally hot, but not super hot, but on game day she looked super hot. Great timing for her. Not that she needs it. but it must feel good to move up a level.
