You're right. Schools are labeled as a "non-profit" organizations for a reason. I guess schools now focus more on profit.
What are the odds Gillespie is still at Kentucky in 3 years? He's never stayed at one job for more than 3 years. even when he was coaching high school. I know that now he's supposedly at the top of the food chain but I'm just saying, what if he moves on again?
When I said "why discriminate based on athletics" I was actually trying to be funny. Anyways... We can agree to disagree. To me there is no reason athletes shouldn't get a free pass. Its basically there job, they work for the university. Its up to them whether they pursue something worthwhile. It may get you all riled up, put it happens. And its not going to change.
It's possible that he will be gone, but if he does leave then the commitment can be rescinded. It's happened before and it will happen again. I would like to think that he will stay at UK to win at least a championship or two. It will take him a bit to accomplish that. I don't think he will leave until then, or if he is asked to leave. The only coach since Rupp took over in 1931 that we have had that didn't win a championship was Eddie Sutton. To say he is disliked in Kentucky would be an understatement. As for Avery, I am sure we will hear a lot about him now... the media has been slamming the commitment, but not really UK. They think there should be a minimum age of 16 or something. Personally, the school takes all the risk in getting a verbal from a kid that young, so why should the NCAA step in. It lets the kid be a kid without having to worry about the whole recruiting process through high school.
This is crazy...are you kidding me? hey, like he said, now all he has to do is find a HS...academics be damned...
Unless the player can get into NBA, otherwise it is stupid to not actually get the free education while on scholarship. What do you want the kid to do after "college" McDonalds?
I posted a few links in the College thread on Michael Avery. He seems like he comes from a pretty grounded family. I don't think he would just be a one and done. I have no doubt there will be some sort of response by the NCAA on this before the season starts. They have nothing better to do than track text messages and argue over how young is too young!
I kinda agree with Ziggy to an extent. Who's to say that intelligence can only be measured IQ and school work. If you found out Steve Nash failed math in high school, that doesn't change the fact that the dude has an incredible basketball 'IQ'. its not about basketball IQ, its about the IQ to pass courses and get a degree. i'm sure theres tons of talent at the JUCO levels of college basketball, but some might not have had the grades to go to D-1 schools. what Ziggy is saying, at least from what I can tell, schools should just pick up these kids regardless since they have such talent. i agree, sports can bring in a lot of money for a school. i dont agree that players should get a pass because of that.
