With this draft being super deep and exciting, I thought I'd post the 84 Draft documentary that aired earlier this month for those who haven't seen it. It has quite a bit on Hakeem. Enjoy.
That was pretty good, there were probably another 10-15 players in that draft they could have spent time on. Best draft class ever.
One tidbit I heard that made me think was Carlisle saying something along the lines that during the mavs 2011 championship run they ran a "flow" offense. "With pretty much zero set plays, just reacting out there making us unpredictable and harder to guard" Sounds like something McHale takes a lot of heat for doing.
Its a decent enough idea in principle but executing it is much harder to do. That team was full of savvy veterans like Jason Kidd, Dirk, and Jason Terry. Our guys lack the discipline and experience to maximize the effectiveness of that type of attack.
You can only do that with smart, mature veteran players with small egos on the floor and a coach who will kick them in the rump and sit them on the bench when they play soft and do dumb things. None of those are true of the Rockets and McHale.
That's exactly what I was thinking. The Oscar part of the documentary was my favorite. I think he could have been very good player, but his Legend will always be greater than the player he would have been IMO
When it comes to all-time teams, I'd be happy with the 1984 draft class: Dream MJ Perkins Barkley Robertson Thorpe Willis Cage Stockton Campbell Kersey Schmidt You've got all the offense, defense, rebounding, versatility, toughness, and clutchness you'd need. Plus, there's a bunch of grown men in that group.
