http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/year/eqstats.php I think most of them r at middle of the ocean..so ppl dont get report on them.
exactly my thoughts.. the earth is too old. by 2012, every part of the world will be "chillin...", 8.8 earthquake. so stop all that house renovation plans and spend your money wisely. go visit your families... relationship is the most important thing to keep your soul in peace. but i pray to God that I'll be wrong about 2012.
and of course, max out your credit cards . it's a win-win situation. if it happens, it happens. if it doesn't, we all should be glad.
They all get recorded. The one that I posted are the one that are 7 or above. They are the one that's going to create most damages. Haiti had a magnitude of 7. Chilie had a 8.8 magnitude but luckily it's probably way out of populated area. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/how_much_bigger.php
on a side note...did anyone else hear about the 4.4 earthquake that hit Oklahoma? Surely that had nothing to do with the Chile earthquake but what a weird thing to happen. I heard about it around 11pm tonight but havent heard about casualties as of yet.
No injuries and little property damage from what I've read. Quakes of over 3.5-4.0 are fairly common around the world. Oklahoma's had about 3 or 4 this year that registered 2.5 or higher I think. The 4.4 is the strongest, though.
Great earthquake site for those interested : http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ It's amazing how many earthquakes happen and nobody even hears about them. Look at the number that have happened this year alone. Yeah some are minor, but still.
Tow different security cams recorded the earthquake: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b-lq2QWLdOg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b-lq2QWLdOg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
So far, death toll in Chile earthquake passes 700 http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/02/28/chile.quake/index.html?hpt=T2
You see, you've fallen prey to the number one rule of the internet: message board karma. In criticizing someone, you've done the very thing you are accusing them of. You don't have any room to call anyone an idiot, and your comment above is the very definition of having nothing better to say. It was a very, very obvious joke. I'll spell it out for you: The cam is shaky. During an earthquake. Get it?
ANY WORD ON RELIEF EFFORTS?!?!? <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/A2zp16tqE-g&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/A2zp16tqE-g&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object> This looks scary. Watch the entire thing. Electricity is going off everywhere and the poles are shaking.
I heard this morning that Chile has putten the call out for international aid. I'm not sure why it took them this long whether it was because they underestimated the scope or for political reasons. As far as helping out I haven't seen anything specific but giving to groups like the Red Cross is always helpful. One thing that might be going on in the lack of coverage of aid efforts might be disaster fatigue with this coming so close to Haiti and also the Winter Olympics taking up a lot of the media coverage.
