Man...same guy that traded Schilling & Rolen and gave a crappy deal to Burrell? The only thing they got out of him was Ryan Howard. Not liking this at all.
lol, Do the Jennings trade over. Do you think the Texans extend David Carr if they could do it again? Do you think the Rockets trade three first rounders for Eddie Griffen if they could do it again? Most GM's and baseball people ripped the Astros when they made the deal and to think someone who calls himself a "baseball guy" could defend the move now is one of the most outrageous things I have ever heard.
not to make this thread go way offtopic but Jennings was hurting last year and purpura said he didn't know about it while fans did. purpura may have known and decided to try to pass the injury off as if it happened this year and jennings was fine before.
I'm tired of having that mentality about the Astros...it's becoming a freaking broken record. The hire the people that you would least likely expect... I'm losing faith in this team and that's hard for me to do being a die hard Houston fan. This year was the first year I did not go to a single game. I go every year...for god's sake im a damn sponsor and have a ticket bank and didn't use a single one...i wasted the money in a sense but i just wasn't happy and couldn't get up to and root for a team that was in so many ways half assing it and made such horrible decisions throughout out the year. This signing is another one to add to my hate list. Now all i can do is hope he can shut me up and prove me wrong...if not i will be right back to where i started.
That's a perfect example. I think that was a great trade. Terrific move. Most basketball people thought so as well. It just unfortunately didn't work out. It happens sometimes. Knowing what they know now, of course they wouldn't do it... but given the information they had at the time, it made sense. And that's the only fair way to evaluate a GM. Who are these GMs? I saw a couple of "anonymous" GMs sourced... max. And I'll let you in on a little journalism secret: if you have an agenda you want to push and you won't force people to go on the record, you can get a few executives somewhere to give you some quotes. Pretty simple. Don't get me wrong; in reality, that has turned out to be a terrible move. I agree with you. But I don't have a problem with Purpura for it, because I agree with his decision-making process with the information he had at the time.
How'd we get Ryan Howard from Burrell, Schilling, or Rolen? I thought we drafted him out of JC and developed him in our farm system. At least Wade didn't trade Howard for random crap when Thome was blocking his way (btw, Thome's big contract was another mistake of Wade). That's about the only thing he did right.
There wasn't a single person nationally that praised that deal. The only people who were in favor of it were the local schills.
Keep in mind, many of the things said this season are spin. It was known his velocity slipped a bit last season, but his performance that season was so good that it didn't seem to affect him.
From what I remember, I highly disagree with this... but I'm not sure. I'll do some research in a bit to see what I can find.
I don't have any video but I am pretty sure all the "experts" on tv were praising Colorado and raising their eyebrows at the stros. I don't remember seeing any anything written (other than in the chron) saying the stros came out well in this deal. Let me let you in on a little secret, if you trade three players under club control (one a very nice pitching prospect, another a arm who is good enough to be on you roster and make spot starts and another who is your starting CF) for an average pitcher with average stuff in a contract year you don't need a GM to tell you it's a bad deal some guy in the 400's can tell you that.
Please do. Jennings was a disaster waiting to happen. He'd given up more hits than innings pitched ever year of his career save his career best. He had an ERA+ below 100 ever year save his rookie season (and 30 innings or so the year prior) and then his last year in Colorado. A fairly pedestrian strike out rate, a non spectacular walk rate, and pretty pedestrian away stats as well. Top it all off with the fact that he didn't have some sort of dominating arsenal and pitched in the weak NL West, and this trade was a DISASTER for the Astros. And before you say "he pitched in Colorado", only an IDIOT pays a premium for a guy whot hey have to try and excuse the bulk of his career. That doesn't mean you don't gamble on him at a good price, but the Stros gave up a starting CF, a Starting pitcher who they were high on, and a major league journeyman ALL COST CONTROLLED for a guy who looks like a major league journeyman making more than 7 mil. 3 for 1, cheap for expensive, lots of potential for gambling on the "Coor's Effect." Idiot trade.
It wasn't gambling on the Coors effect. It was expecting him to maintain a somewhat similar line of production. 3.78 ERA, 11th ranked SP in the majors in VORP... he had an excellent season. Did I expect him to produce the same numbers? No, I didn't. I expected an ERA in the low 4s. Considering the slight Coors effect as well as his excellent performance a season ago, I thought that was reasonable. So did essentially every scouting service in the business. If he had done that, imo it would have been a good deal. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way.
Jennings was far, far above average in 2006. And Taveras is still below average for a starting CF. Just wanted to clarify. Anyway, I'm going to try and step out of this thread for the time being, seeing as how this is about Wade, not Purp. I'm sorry for the diversion.
One time. One time he put up a good season. Park adjusted statistics for each prior show he was below average. The Astros gambled that all those other bad years were just "Coors" weighing him down. By the way, what scouting service "in th business" do you use exactly?
So, basically, you were wrong? I'm not getting involved. I just enjoy reading the posts while you guys go back and forth. Not a wade fan, but I think that as long as Drayton is taking the policy of him being involved in personnel moves, I think the GM matters little And to those saying that Drayton is the cat's *ss, I agree that he is the best owner that this franchise has ever had and it's been great having playoff teams for the past decade, BUT his meddling ways NOW are becoming problematic from a talent standpoint. This shouldn't discount the money he has paid or the great teams he has owned in the PAST
I'm not too thrilled with the hire but I'm willing to give him a shot. This guy found Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Michael Bourne. These are some damn good players. This is one of those cases, though, where I'd actually feel comfortable with Uncle Drayton looking over his shoulder before deals are made. We cannot afford to throw away money at bad players. This franchise has done amazing things at finding cheap durable talent. No more Jennings deals and no more Woody contracts and our future will be okay.
