Holy crap. This hit me out of the blue. I just found out about this on here. Didn't Matt Jackson just get back from a week-long vacation or something? I liked the morning show although at times Wex could get redundant. I also just saw the new schedule and, from the looks of it, my day-long listening of 790 on the IHeartRadio app has been destroyed : Lance and Adam (6-9am) - love both of these guys. I thought Charlie was stomping all over Lance's delivery during their show. Sadly, if it's from 6-9, I probably won't get to listen to any of it. Kalu & Koch (9-11am) - it can be a beatdown sometimes when there's no football, but during football season, I'm hoping I love this show. Jay Mohr (11am-2pm) - I doubt I'll listen to this. I may give it a shot just to hear what he's like, but I'd rather listen to local takes (well, local to Houston, since I'm in the DFW area). Matt Thomas (2-4pm) - I like Matt's show for a not-so-serious look at sports, but it relies a lot on the nutcases that call in and Ross being a punching bag. Hopefully the nutcases get the memo that the show moved. Charlie (4-7pm) - I'll doubt I'll be able to catch Charlie for even an hour now with the new schedule. He's still my favorite sports-talk host. Like I said before, I thought Charlie and Lance would mesh together better, but Lance's and Charlie's styles conflict a bit, and it always seemed to me that Lance's takes were being trampled by Charlie's stream-of-consciousness takes. lol. I wish Matt and Adam the best of luck. They were good and entertaining. It truly sucks that they're gone. I think they were the ones that started me listening to 790... or at least listening a lot more.
I know you said that somewhat in jest, but I think there's some truth there. Most of us are upset because we are serious sports fans that want to hear sports talk about ALL of the local sports teams, not just the same tired conversations about the Texans and talk about national sports stories. The problem is that most folks that listen to sports radio are more casual fans that flock to the shows they know, which are Mike and Mike and whatever is on 610 because they know the Texans games are on 610. Speaking of Mike and Mike, I'm with the poster that mentioned that their schtick is old. We get it, Golic thinks Greenberg is a dweeb and Greenberg thinks Golic is a meathead. I know that station executives can't afford to throw their hands up and give up, but at some point, the people in charge of 790 and 1560 may need to realize that it's very, very unlikely that anyone will ever beat Mike and Mike's as far as mornings go and 610 is probably going to beat you in the other day parts as long as they have the Texans.
Lance and Clanton will be terrible. Too guys with severe radio ADD, one that only likes to talk football and tell jokes and one that only likes to tell jokes. Yuck. I will now be boycotting 790 to protest this. I hope Matt and Adam end up somewhere else. I don't think either is good alone without the other, but together they are a perfect match.
I never thought I'd say it, but 610 will have my business again. Meltzer is the best thing going on the radio in Houston. It will be radio silence in the afternoon I guess because I can't listen to that crap on 610 in the afternoon.
What. Big surprise. I was always a fan of them but I will admit that they were losing my interest recently but I figured that had more to do with the time of year then them.
So Matt Thomas is now a 2 hour show? That blows, he definently knows how to keep things entertaining when things get stale. Especially with this crappy Astros team.
Totally agree. As much as I hate Stephen A Smith, the interview they did with him on the day of the Dwight signing was very good. The only reason I listened to the Big Show was for their Morey interviews. They had a good relationship with him and it showed in their interviews. Made it really enjoyable
I don't like homer shows. I don't even like sports radio to begin with. One thing I don't like is national sports radio because they're always disrespect Houston sports. Listen to the Scott Van Pelt show and the Herd with Colin Cowherd . I hate those idiots they just hate the Rockets. And two is I hate local shows because they're homers. I only listen to Rockets or Texans games when I'm on the road.
too much turnover in houston sports radio. they can't improve ratings because people are sick of the turnover and just quit listening altogether.
Do you guys remember that Jay Mohr had a brief sitcom recently where he played like a contractor or a painter who gets a shot at becoming a sports talk radio host. I think he's just a bit too wrapped up in Jim Rome.
Agree. You could always count on AW having a devil's advocate take on whatever MJ had to say, no matter what he had to say. I got tired of this real quick. I came to like LZ on Charlie's show (I'm not a big Houston sports radio guy, other than Charlie, who I've loved since he was on 790 at night from like 6-9), so I'm happy he'll be on in the mornings now. Mornings and Charlie were my main listening times. As an out-of-towner, I only discovered the IHRadio app within the past year, and I only use it to tune in to 790, I guess b/c of Charlie. Not happy that Charlie gets cut by an hour. Seriously? In the Trenches comes out of all this pretty much unscathed, while CP loses an hour, morning show loses an hour, and Thomas gets bumped out of the lunch-timer slot.
I listened to Matt and Adam pretty consistently, and even I have to say that their material in the past few months was going downhill. A lot of topics became good fodder because they were of a social nature. They could certainly get incited listeners calling in, but it wasn't about sports. For example the ENTIRE topic this morning was about that Eagles guy using the N-word; I don't even know the topic because I don't care. It's not sports. I think this was lazy radio; I am a big Matt and Adam fan owing to their days doing the post-game show for the Rockets in the 90's, but perhaps in the future they'll learn from this experience and stick to having solid takes on local stories. Don't just go to ESPN and find out what's trending. In Houston we want to hear about Houston teams. 610 was all-Texans all the time, and you know what? It's working. It's better than what Matt and Adam chucked out there for the past two months (excepting the Dwight Howard special show which was money). I hope they get jobs in this market once again. But they can't just blame the outside circumstances (declining ratings compared to 610, the start of college football/NFL mania). They need to look inside as well and see what they can improve upon.
