this had nothing to do with ratings...any logical person could see this. 790 will never be better than Mike and Mike in the morning. Houston is largely integrated of people who are not even from Houston. I do pest control and I go to maybe 11-14 ppl houses a day. Most of them are not even from Houston (transplant) for medical field and Oil & Gas industry. 790 will lose in mid-days cause 610 has a local show from 10-2 with Jay Mohr on now. I do not even like 610 because its all Texans talk but 790 is Texans Radio 2.0--Jim Rome today is better than Jay Mohr will ever be because he knows sports. First 30 minutes of Lance and Clanton show today was all over the place w/ diabetes talk and being in the dog house with the wife....nobody want to hear that garbage. Lance do not know anything about basketball or baseball cause he is so stuck on breaking down OL and the 4th RB. Why you think 1560 fired Clanton cause after the impersonations, tan work, hair products he has nothing to talk about. They are what I like to call "Bandwagon Fans" ---Did they even mention Ohbolhozer shutout on the Red Sox last night. After Al Favre left 790 the Sports Talk had went down and went left field....I did not like Mighty Gwinn at first but his takes stirred deep convo but this In The Treaches BS is stupid...you cannot have a 2 hour show about football when the Rockets are in the middle of a playoff run last year or this year coming up....Why doesn't 790 have Saturday shows are something. Fox Sports is big enough like CBS radio where that can get a station like 650 where it is all National Radio and still have all local radio like 610....790 you are better than this trash that you are putting out!!!!
I love Lance Z. But I don't like the pairing of him and Clanton. Neither is strong on baseball. I thought Lance and Granato worked for that reason. I didn't love Wexler or Matt Jackson but like others have said they really care about all Houston major sports (Rockets, Astros, Texans) and were great at interviews (Morey).
I'm confused. Last I checked Mike and Mike is a national show and you said it's better than 790's local show. Yet you go on to say Mohr will lose mid-days for 790 because it's up against a local show on 610? Wouldn't all those transplants you run into be more interested in non-local programming?
Apart from the coughs, burps, getting caught not paying attention etc. on air, my favorite part of the big show was when they got really excited about an obvious set up, then tried to shout their own jokes about it over one another. Yeah definitely give them a chance first. I wouldn't even mind if 790 expanded In the Trenches by a couple of hours, then followed it with a dedicated Uncle Greg show. Lead in to it all each morning with a best of show, featuring highlights from the previous day's In the Trenches & The Uncle Greg Show played at 3/4 speed (with accompanying pitch shift).
I've listened to just enough of the Jay Mohr Show to recognize....it's not for me. I like Jay Mohr otherwise for the most part.
Yeah, he made it pretty clear on multiple occasions. He brought up politics way too frequently for a sports radio station. But I'm sure that had nothing to do with him getting fired, probably ratings based or a fight with management or something.
Okay, now I hate this setup. I don't have much time in the AM to listen to Lance. My commute TO work is short (not from, go figure) and I'm generally too busy in the AM to bother listening to the radio. Now I'm stuck in drive time traffic with Charlie, who I like, but I much prefer Lance... so basically Lance doesn't fit into my schedule anymore, plus I somehow always managed to hear a Morey interview with Matt and Adam.
But wasn't Warner on from 11:30pm to 11:59pm Wed-Thur (basically)? That'd be funny if there was a seesaw effect and a year or two from now 610 is running with 790's schtick and vice versa, I've seen that happen before in this market.
I agree with all this. Lance is great at football discussion. Once you move past that....nothing doing.
The AM show is putrid now. All they talk is football and then you have that In the Trenches garbage with more football. Wex/MJ used to talk plenty basketball.
this just in...it's the week before the first preseason game, Manziel is in our backyard, the astros are embarrassing and it's the nba off season. What else is there to talk about?
