This and the lower ratings seem to be the cause of the change up. Adding a cheap AC and low cost Jay Mohr show and removing two higher priced guys probably was the direction 790 needed to go to meet Clear Channel's reduction requirements. I suspect that if you check across Clear Channel's stations, similar cuts/changes are also taking place (especially in the sports talk arena).
Ding ding ding. Already a Texans-centric town. Can hardly ever hear about Rockets. That'll change when the Rockets season gets here, but the Texans butter the bread around here.
I'm all for talking Rockets once the games start, but c'mon... you're seriously faulting a local sports station for talking about the local NFL team? You'll see that same sort of coverage in nearly every major city that doesn't have a baseball team in the pennant race... those cities will barely speak a wisp of NBA talk. Hell, you'll see NFL-centric conversation in cities that don't even have an NFL team (but may have a basketball team). Even then, regular season NBA is getting more and more meaningless... for the Rockets, it will be exciting to see how Dwight gets integrated, but for most of the country, the interest in the NBA is pretty weak until the playoffs start.
Greg Koch just came into the Adam Clinton show this morning and said he is disappointed because Jay Mohr is terrible and he thinks this station should be about LOCAL radio
Yup, that was awkward and so forced that I did to. I changed it over to a repeat of Howard Stern that had already listened to this week and am now completely done with AM radio in the mornings. Dude is not funny and he acts like a tink. Good luck to Lance I guess, but I'll be listening to Sirius. Done with AM radio.
At least you'll get a TON of Christopher Walken impressions, oh and Hip Hop Friday! While the Dwight saga was going down I listened to some station in LA that played his show. It was Rome light, just turrble turrble radio.
How is any of this Chris Gordy's doing? I heard the decisions to let Matt and Adam go was made from outside of 790 and from Clear Channel Corporate. Nothing he could do. They have to go along with what the corporate suits tell them to do. Probably why Jay Mohr is coming on too.
if 790 really wanted higher ratings, they'd just offer the brink truck to get the texans. then, you could have honey boo bear talking italian brosierres and it would be the highest rated show.
pretty obvious that canning wex and mattj was a pure cost-cutting move. i can promise it had nothing to do with becoming more "texans-centric"... clear channel needed to slash payroll and the bigshow was the obvious choice since their ratings were only so-so and they likely made more than anybody there not named lance and charlie. really going to miss them though... even though they could go off some pretty boring tangesnt they were knowledgeable, cared about htown sports, and talked better rocketball than any other show by a wiiiiiiiiiiiide margin. tried listening to clanton this morning and just couldn't. who the hell wants to listen to some dude read his tweeter feed for 4 hours? it was literally unlistenable. put in on npr after 5 minutes.
perfect summary of his show, I'll give him credit for doing a funny bill walton and an accurate jvg/herb the perb but that's about it.
really not football oriented??? why not have a Rockets dedicated show like in the trenches....no basketball on that show....Lance doesn't know anything but football...its an all out football squeeze...ever since lance came over its slowly but surely turn into a football only station
Ugh. Adam Clanton is a funny guy in short segments and he does good voice impressions, but after 10 minutes or so I can't listen anymore. His entire shtick is being the funnier version of Travis/Rome. I think the Lance/Clanton Experience is going to be a disaster. Lance is really good on the radio but he needs someone else to do the work part of the show. He's not good at listening to callers for long stretches, he can't stay focuses on the other host, etc. Between the two of them it is going to break down into them joking about stupid stuff and laughing at each other for an hour without realizing it.
Because this market would not support it at all. Every host has lamented it in this town. If you spend more than a few minutes talking something other than football, the listeners in Houston change the channel. Unless it's championship/playoff time or there's something controversial. Football drives this town. Charlie gets mad about it on air every year.
Lance will talk basketball and With Adam being with him, I think they will talk a lotof basketball. Charlie just b****es about baseball all the time, that's the worst. I couldn't care less about the Astros let alone the rangers who charlie seems to be dedicating a lotof time to lately.
Lance and Adam have to be REALLLL careful not to turn their show into 24/7 skits and impressions. And I LOVE LZ, but he needs to seriously stop checking out of conversations to READ TWITTER. You can tell he's lost when the conversation is tossed back to him because he's zoned out reading tweets, trying to find something to talk about.
Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think I'll start tuning out for the same reason that John and Lance lost me after a while. They would go off-topic to the point that I had very little idea what they were even talking about (because I didn't listen for every minute every day). I'm afraid that's going to happen here. I'll listen on Monday mornings during football season, but other than that I doubt it.
