He carried his team to a 1-0 lead in the 2001 Finals and almost a 2-0 lead...I would say that is pretty close to the next level.
That was an incredible game by AI... and for anyone who remembered watching it, the refs were extremely biased in the whole series where Lue was pretty much given the green light to mug Iverson on the court any chance he got. I hope he goes back to Philly and gets the proper send-off that he deserves.
FGT FGA PERC 11.1 27.8 39.8 Pass, he sucks, most overrated player ever in the game. 28 shots a game at 39 percent???
“It’s something that’s probably more in the media than it actually is,” Jordan said. “We’re just going about our daily operation of practicing and trying to win a game. But certainly I have not talked to anybody about Allen Iverson.” When Iverson announced his plans to retire earlier this week, his statement hardly sounded like his mind was made up. Saying there is “a whole lot left in my tank,” Iverson said he felt strongly he could still compete “at the highest level.” Jordan spoke after shootaround Sunday morning in San Antonio, where the Sixers arrived with a five-game losing streak and point guard Lou Williams expected to be out eight weeks after jaw surgery. A person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press on Saturday that the Sixers were approached about signing Iverson, and that team management had internal discussions about bringing Iverson back to the city where he spent 10-plus seasons. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because talks have not been made public, said Iverson is among the free-agent candidates the Sixers are considering to replace Williams.
Tell that to the AI lovers here Seems people look at his crossover and forget all the clunkers he throws up...
Marc Stein tweet: "Sixers say that Eddie Jordan and Ed Stefanski met face-to-face with Allen Iverson and his representatives earlier today in Dallas." "No firm decision on signing AI expected before Monday night's game against the Mavs in Dallas but meeting with Team Iverson went two hours."
Iverson, Sixers meet in Dallas By David Aldridge http://www.nba.com/2009/news/11/30/iverson.sixers/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt2
I'd agree that he has been one of, if not the most inefficient high-profile scorer in NBA history. That said, what are you're numbers? For his career, Iverson is 8,346-19,616 in 877 games. So he shoots 9.5-22.4/game...which is 42.5%. He did get to the line over 9 times a game, making at a solid clip...though most high scorers get to the line a lot. Overall, I'd say AI was overrated through a lot of his career, specifically because I believe strongly in efficiency. That said, I think a lot of people also forget the guy has a 6.2 career assist per game average (45th best ALL-TIME), and a 2.2 career steals per game average (6th best ALL-TIME). So as of today, he is 6th best all time in PPG, 6th best all time in SPG and 45th best all time in APG. His lack of efficiency hurts. Basketball reference has him at 73rd best all time in Offensive win share, 93rd in defensive win share and 70th all time in overall win share. i think most overrated player is a stretch.
No. Iverson took an outstanding defensive team that had limited offensive capabilities to the finals.

This is what happens when 29 out of 30 teams put your name on their blacklist. Philly is bringing back Iverson because of 5 reasons in this exact order 1. Attention and possibly attendance 2. Louis Williams is out 3. Jrue Holliday is still a rookie 4. They have nothing to lose 5. They need his scoring Iverson has zero bargaining power right now and this is the best deal he'll get financially other than be a star of his own reality show.
Lack of efficiency plays a factor, even a big one, however stats cannot measure his individual brilliance and his ability to play in tough conditions. He could have done a lot better if it wasn't for his desire to be a one on one player. He had very good passing ability unlike Steve Francis. He did get to the NBA finals with an ordinary team baring Deke. Ironically, that wasn't his best year as a team player. He improved later on for a short while under Larry Brown despite all the arguments,he started taking better shots and tired to fit in better with the team. Unfortunately,he reverted to his old self soon afterwards which has resulted in his downfall. He is 34 now,and still has some skills, but I think his big ego will prevent him from playing pro basketball again.
Regardless of the naysayers on this site, this man will be in the Hall of Fame and that's all that matters....
