quiet down! you arent helping our case here! ive been to matehuala - you have to pass through there to get to real de catorce - killed some time bar hopping there - wonder if i went to your friends?
pretty amazing. people there are friendly to the point where you are thinking "what is your angle here, pal". its really cheap and the country is gorgeous. spent a week or so at lake atitlan, which is just one of the most beautiful places i have ever laid eyes on. its a former volcano that blew out and is now a 1000' deep lake at an elevation of 5,000' and its surrounded by other volcanoes. also spent time in antigua, which is a really cool colonial city - lots of neat artisan/crafts - bought alot of stuff like masks, textiles, coffee, ect.
I have to check it out. It also gets the "Dangerous" tag a lot but I've been to Mexico City, Ecuador, Colombia without any problems so I imagine it's overblown by the resort tripadvisor crowd.
mexicans like to stare - its a cultural thang. i wouldnt worry about it from a safety issue. they are just curious about the guerros. our bus had to go throught a zapatista checkpoint on the way from palenque to san cristobal - it was out in the mountains in the middle of nowhere, but no problems. they arent going to be a problem at all unless you are down there trying to interfere in their affairs - i was more worried about highway bandits. cops are very rare, so id rather have the zapatistas than nothing.
you probably have! it's called Las Malvinas. That town has more bars than anything else. I have family there, and my mom currently lives there (immigration BS!)
Usually hotel staff are really nice about letting you change rooms when that happens. "We're sorry about that. How about a room upgrade?"
thats true, but if the bodies are still fresh than you get some limes and cilantro and you have some tasty cerviche! yall going to the "mayan riviera" - the beaches there are beautiful - yall will have a great time. cancun is expensive as s*** though - i remember getting a burger/fries/drink combo at burger king and it was like 10 bucks american. when i say cancun is kind of unsafe, i dont mean the hotel zone, im talking about the town itself. id say its a little more sketchy there than your average city in mexico. and if you have a day, you can do a tour that takes you to tulum, which are mayan ruins right on the ocean and a really cool place called xel-ha - its where a bunch of those underground rivers empty out into the ocean, so its a mix of fresh, springwater and saltwater. great place for snorkeling. that was my first time to really do it, so i dont have a frame of reference, but i must say i enjoyed it alot more than i expected to. i also had never swam w/ good fins before - i literally felt like a fish. anyway, its a package tour that includes lunch onsight as well as rental of snorkling equipment. www.xelha.com
b-bob, they better give us the president suite! thanks, jo mama. we went to playa del carmen to get married this past May. I loved loved it there. Beautiful. We didn't have time to do a lot of sightseeing. So we def will do Tulum! I've heard of Xel-Ha and sooo want to do that!!! Hopefully, we'll get a chance to do it. Husband wants to do nothing but lay on the beach.
another article on this. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38867434/ns/world_news-americas/ ugh, that's awful.
My reaction has become "just another day in Mexico!". This whole planet is evil. It would be nice if God would snap his fingers and instantly disappear all the people without a moral compass. We need another great flood...and to start over. Get the arcs ready ala "2012". I need a lift to China.
coastal or interior? or rather, what are your interests - cities, beaches, off-the-beaten-path places? how much effort are you willing to put into getting there? how much are you willing to spend? what kind of traveler are you - suitcase or backpack?
