HAHA and they always tell kids to not do drugs. I wasn't tripping balls like that until I got into high school.

"tripping" lost its connection to drug use, so the new term "tripping balls" is now in popular use to distinguish it as drugs.
I think I get it. You're saying that "tripping" now has meaning beyond drug use, and generally means something like "you're goofy" ? ... and because of that, a new phrase of "tripping balls" has been created... which is specific to drug use. Is that it?
I think they have it wrong. I think the "balls" is to emphasize one is tripping heavily, not just feeling a little high.
Multiple tooth extraction is what it looks to be...things must have been really f'ed up in his mouth for that to happen. Funny stuff.
