I like these: Hagia Sophia-Turkey The Kremlin- Russia The Alhambra- Spain The Great Wall of China- China Angkor- Cambodia The Taj Mahal- India Petra- Jordan
The original list of seven wonders should be left alone. That said, if you were going to build a new list of wonders, and you only wanted to limit it to seven... IMHO whatever makes the list should be something of such scale that nothing like it will ever be built again (like the Great Wall of China), or perhaps an object that has an inconceivable importance to humanity (such as The Panama Canal). That would definitely cancel out the opera house, the Eiffel Tower, and the Jesus Statue.
The Acropolis- Greece - Birthplace of democracy The Colosseum- Italy - The first sports stadium The Great Wall of China- China - Currently being studied by the U.S. Border Patrol Machu Picchu- Peru - The real city in the clouds The above is from the list. Here would be my three additions. Panama Canal - If you can't find the Northwest Passage, build your own shortcut. Mt. Rushmore - Seems pretty impressive to me. The Channel Tunnel (Chunnel) from England to France - Now William the Conquer could walk on over.
correct, andre was the 8th and chyna was the 9th. LOL i was just waiting for someone to make the chyna reference, thats the first thing that came to my mind
Well, it was a technological marvel - it was cutting edge as far as materials go. Also, as pointed out, it was the tallest structure in the world for some time. Further, nobody thought it would be able to support itself. Everyone but Eiffel thought it would immediately collapse or only lat we few weeks or so. In fact it was built only for the World's Fair and the intention was to tear it down (or simply let it come down on its own). It, of course, never had any real structural issues and even today has only had a few additions to ensure its strength. Even though everyone hated it at first, the fact that it was so ahead of it's time and beat all of the "known" odds it is now beloved by all of France and one of the most recognizable monuments in the world. For such lists, though, they should keep it separated by era.
Versaille is worth seeing in general for all of the crap that is going on there. I have been about 5 times. I mostly went for classes but I also attended a Christmas choral concert in the Royal Chapel (designed by Hardouin-Mansart) that was wonderful - both for the experience/acoustics and because I think that the chapel is Versaille's best architectural space. Vaux-Le-Vicomte is better, though. It was Louis's inspiration for Versaille (he had the original owner charged on invented treason and imprisoned just because it was so amazing) and is far superior for a unified Chateau experience. I would put it #1 for all "modern" Chateau/estate experiences.
This is my list: The Acropolis- Greece The Colosseum- Italy Stonehenge- United Kingdom The Great Wall of China- China The Easter Island Statues- Chile Machu Picchu- Peru Chichen Itza- Mexico Vamos Chichén Itzá, Mexico should be represented in that list!!
I would say: The Acropolis- Greece The Kremlin- Russia The Colosseum- Italy The Great Wall of China- China The Taj Mahal- India Petra- Jordan Machu Picchu- Peru
I have been there a couple of times, i especially liked the gardens, there are some nice statues in there(altough i think they are replicates). It is defenitly worth visiting.
stonehenge is fascinating in a similar way the pyramids are because it's crazy to think about the man power it took to build these things. those rocks are big as ****. i always wonder how they got the top layer of stone thats resting on the "pillars" or whatever you want to call them. they must have built some kind of giant wooden ramp. anyone watch "digging for the truth" on the history channel? HUGELY entertaining and informative. they've had a show on many of the places listed in this thread.
Good call. I agree with that one. So... my list only has three so far: The Great Wall of China The Panama Canal The Chunnel hmm...
