Yeah I know.... I just feel like they were doing well. We progressed nicely for 3 seasons. Everything was in place until all of the wheels fell off. Some really bad draft choices and FA signings came back to bite us in the ass. It sucks because I was really looking forward to going to the playoffs this year. Its been frustrating as a fan to watch.... blah humbug.
Hence my post about "run, run, pass." We already have (had?) a boring, conservative coach in Capers (and the recently departed Palmer). That didn't turn out too well. Assuming he's here to help consult on coaching prospects, I don't want Reeves and his ideology of old-fashioned coaching to fetch us yet another conservative coach. (You zealous Bush supporters would probably spontaneously explode if Bush were used improperly by an old-fashioned coach.) However, I hope Reeves proves me wrong. Bagging Kubiak would be quite a coup.
Have you read the article in the Chronicle over the weekend? McNair admitted to being out of the loop as an owner and that Casserly lied to him about Buchanon. Yet Casserly still has a job (and rumor is only Capers will get the axe...is this a joke?). I don't expect McNair to be like Cuban but is it too much to ask to get an owner with a pulse? Is this how McNair runs his business? He's wealthy so he must be doing something right. But his football operation is a joke.
From ESPN Insider: Reeves' presence speaks volumes Texans owner Bob McNair's decision to hire Dan Reeves as a six-week consultant tells a lot about the future of the team. First, it says for sure that Dom Capers is gone as head coach. Why hire a consultant if you're going to retain the coach? But the decision to bring in Reeves for this length of time also signals the likelihood that GM Charley Casserly will be fired after the season, as well. Casserly is a good football man. He set up a great organization in Houston, but McNair knows bringing back Capers and Casserly would be a hard sell to Houston's fans. Since Reeves has a voice, one man to watch is Ronnie Hill, who orchestrated the Michael Vick trade for Reeves in Atlanta. Hill is a great evaluator and is willing to make bold moves to improve a franchise.
Interesting, does it say who wrote the article Vescey? No suprise that Capers and Casserly should be gone next year. Was Ronnie Hill the GM for ATL?
I know he's a bad coach, but I kind of feel bad for Capers as a person. McNair basically just told him that he's a lame duck coach. This has to be the longest firing in NFL history. Almost a whole season. Capers is a good man and I hold no ill will towards him as a person. He's never been anything but 100% class since he's been here, much of the time under difficult circumstances. Maybe he can catch on as a DC with a good team. Or take the Pete Carroll route and coach in college. Either way, I hope he lands on his feet. Man, being a football coach must be a tough way to make a living...
Agreed, I think Dom is getting the worst of it when it's Casserly who has failed year after year to build a decent OL. He has made garbage picks that Dom has not been able to use at all (Babin, Joppru). I think Casserly will get rightfully canned as well. But I honestly don't think Capers ever had the talent to make the Texans a winning franchise.
I know Kubiak wouldn't mind that. I know for a fact he has some family in the area. I knew his niece....
P.S. A different niece of his graduated from Magnolia with my sister and he spoke at their graduation. It was pretty cool.
I'm sure Capers had a say in the players as well, after all he is the one who installed the 3-4 defense, so the players that were brought in the team were to taylor in to that system. So both are at fault and should be gone together It is really mind boggling how stupid this combo of guys were doing to the franchise. I mean even the fans felt and knew the draft picks, FA signings, and trade decisions were weird.
Casserly needs to go before Capers does. That dude stresses me out each and every NFL Draft Day. I really cant go through his shananagans again.
"There are two kinds of coaches. Those that have been fired. And those that are gonna be." -Bum Phillips
As long as Casserly is fired the rest will take care of itself. This is a talent- impact player league and it has only taken Casserly 4 seasons to ruin the franchise. We have expansion level talent after 30+ draft picks and not one single impact free agent. Thanks Charlie- please move on.
How do you explain a team going from 7-9 to 1-15? I blame Casserly, mostly. Sure Dom, his staff, and the players have their part, but they are mere accomplices to Casserly's crime. The Babin trade was one thing, but the trade that really sunk this season was the Buchanon trade. We should stage a mock trial. Think about it, he basically gave away 4 players for NOTHING! Exhibit A. Aaron Glenn - Left as a direct result of the Buchanon trade Exhibits B. and C. Two draft picks - We'll never know who these would have turned into, but Odell Thurman would have been there when we picked, and that's two less chances to improve the team. and finally the most damning evidence Exhibit D. Phillip Buchanon himself - We already know he was a bust on the field and now we don't even have him to return punts since he is lost for the season, not that I can blame Charley for an injury but still. That and his being bluffed by Al Davis into making this trade are more than enough to establish his guilt. There you have it, ladies and gentleman of the jury. This man, Charley Casserly is guilty of murder, the murder of the Texans 2005 season. We ask that you return a verdict of GUILTY.
This is all very valid. The fact that Charley and Dom didn't find out about Reeves until late, doesn't say much for their future. I think that Reeves might come in as GM. How was the Reeves/Kubiak relationship in Denver?
