But Hayes is on another planet defensively than Blair ever will be. Chuck is a defensive specialist and a above average rebounder nothing more. For what the rockets are paying Hayes and what they had to give up to get him, he's a huge gem.
DM- "Oh great, went by Starbucks, people say its pricey, but if you really dig and analyze their menu, you can usually find something worth the time and money". I chuckled at this because Morey's approach is the same whether it's basketball or everyday stuff. Glad to see we have a frugal GM who is wise with Les' money. I'm curious about the future when Mcgrady's contract is off the book.
I haven't listened to the interview yet, but I'm pretty sure that transcript posted by the other poster is a fake/joke.
You never fail to make outrageous comments. Blair hasn't even played a regular season game yet. Relax.
610: assess the rockets? DM - lots of work to do. we're getting a feel for the challenge and we're up for it. but execution is not where its needed to be to win games we need to win to stay in the playoff race 610: you're talking offensively, defensively, a little bit of everything? concerned? DM: yea, both sides. we're coming after a loss so... lol 610: WE STINK haha DM: pick and roll D was disappointing in bucks game -> gave up lots of open 3s and we were the best at guarding the 3pt line last year. offense should be more of a struggle b/c of lots of changes, but we're still finding things out and will clean it up as adelman give them more freedom and see what guys can do and will start to narrow things down to find the combinations that we know will work better 610: part of the frustration is to see someone take a bigger step in preseason? the guy? DM: some of the guys we feel good about. landry, but not as aggressive as we want to be in the post... we don't know if we have a go-to guy, but AB will be our bailout guy when the shot clock winds down. usually it's a perimeter player, not a post player 610: trevor ariza. off to a slow start shooting the ball, overall assessment? DM: keep things simple; he's trying too hard, passing up open shots to do more. adelman has encouraged guys to do more, but he just needs to keep it simple and only attack when guys overplay. on defense, the scheme is different than the lakers so we're trying to get him up to speed. but we're not worried about him b/c he's done it and won a title. THE ROLE WE WANT HIM TO PLAY IS THE SAME AS WITH THE LAKERS. 610: still preseason, so give us a rundown of your post presence in terms of rotation DM: our rotation is going to be up to coach. shane/trevor/anderson/luis/carl/chuck are going to be in the rotation and coach is still sorting out in terms of minutes... cook/dorsey/pops will play when guys get in foul trouble...chase might get in there but that's not 100% (WHAT???) 610: get a lot of calls on dorsey? he's not living up to the expectations? DM: rebounding greatest strength, if chuck is in foul trouble, we need someone who can bang and rebound (like the one-dimensional rebounders blair/evans...). his defense is inconsistent b/c doesn't follow the game plans. overall offense is inconsistent b/c not in the right spots. so has a long way to go. but his skillset and where he could be though is optimistic 610: huge yao fan, underappreciated... lopez is a shameless yao supporter..tracy, that's another story. let's talk about yao. rick is not quite happy with the way things are going. but the absence of yao for 82+ games is going to be a huge obstacle? DM: we feel we miss him more on defense b/c it's harder to replace. folks see the defenses in terms of all-nba D, but him always be behind and alter things at the rim... he always get better in terms of not fouling... so we're more concerned...offense, he was efficient so we will miss that but we feel like through motion/running/adelman's offense, we have a better shot at replacing that side of the ball than defense 610: some ppl see a sportscenter highlight b/c someone's dunking on him and think yao can't play D. but he alters shots and some teams don't even try to get into the lane b/c of yao DM: that's another layer to defense and it does make it harder for guys to get shots off in the lane...that will be difficult to replace. we had deke, but the money we had to spend, we didn't feel good about spending money on ppl who can give us that role. we feel their overall impact is negative and we had to go with the guys we had. anderson won't have that impact -> only offense. that's why yao is a max player -> he impacts both sides of the ball. right now, we're putting out a $30 mil payroll team and waits till yao/tracy comes back going against $80-90 mil teams FAN: how do you think tracy will impact the team when he comes back in terms of trevor ariza (like playing off kobe)? DM: looking forward to tracy's return; perfect player when we get him back 100% in terms of our wing rotation; works well w/ trevor/shane; great offensive player in terms of creating for himself and others; when he comes back, we'll take a big step forward; coach doesn't want guys going in and out of the lineup so we need him 100%; don't know when he coems back FAN: hakeem working out with kobe? what about having him working with dorsey? DM: hadn't heard that, but knows hakeem works with lots of players. was just here in TC a few weeks ago, met with yao and others.. in terms of dorsey feel good about how we're working with him and it's all about execution at this point 610: replacement refs? are you worried? quality of the game/impact on the game? DM: u trying to get me fined? (funny)... lots of hesitation...i think they'll be fine. we trust the commish. FAN: tracy had been working out in practice, if tracy can get in there healthy, houston will be one to watch DM: tracy has been mixing in scrimmages, in and out as his health has let him, when in, he's been spirited and great mindset to get back on the floor...we know it's gonna happen and it's a matter of time...big wildcard on our season and how well we'll do
DD, you know better than this. Yeah, one day Blair *might* be the defender Chuck is but the odds are not very good. It's like some people think that with just a little effort and by watching a "Better Basketball" DVD every post guy in the league could be the defender Hayes is. If it were that simple, almost every player in the league would defend like Chuck and make extra couple million a year. He's elite because he has the strength, knowledge, effort and instincts to be that way. People don't want to admit it but the guy has a very, very high basketball IQ and some physical skills that are overlooked.
I guess your name fits you well. The Joker because the comment you just made was a joke. Chuck Hayes Elite defender??? Are you sure??? That sounds like a homer comment. If he is so elite why hasn't he been nominated for defensive player of the year. If so elite then why do people still find ways to jump over and shoot over him?
