Juwan just signed a 2 year deal with Minnesota for 7M. The CBA won't allow Juwan to sign for the vet min, if the Rox want him it'll cost 7M.

I doubt he signs with the Rox.

Juwan already had a contract. Why would they need to sign him to a 2 year contract? I think that's what is left on his old contract.

Well since the James trade happened before June 30th, Reed and Juwan could be traded back to their old teams.

Bob Sura, John Lucas III, and Justin Reed work for Juwan in trade salaries.

The Wolves would then cut Sura and only have to pay him $1 million as that's all he has guaranteed.

They could then cut John Lucas III and pay him only $500,000 as that's all he has guaranteed.

They then swap Reed for Juwan and get rid of Juwan's contract.

The Rockets dump 3 players they can't use and get a backup 4/5. Meaning they just trimmed two roster spots.

    ESPN.com Trade Machine:

    This Trade Succeeded!

    Minnesota Timberwolves

    Incoming Players

    John Lucas
    Salary: $770,610 Years Remaining: 2

    Justin Reed
    Salary: $1,529,873 Years Remaining: 1

    Bob Sura
    Salary: $3,840,000 Years Remaining: 1

    Outgoing Players: Juwan Howard

    Houston Rockets

    Incoming Players

    Juwan Howard
    Salary: $6,883,800 Years Remaining: 2

At that point this would be the roster, assuming Mutombo signs, which all reports indicate he will once roster spots are opened up:

    PG Francis/James/Brooks
    SG McGrady/Head/Snyder
    SF Battier/Wells/Novak
    PF Scola/Hayes/Howard
    C Yao/Mutombo/Butler

    and Alston

They would just cut Harris and Landry.

Then all Morey has to do is deal Alston for a Trade Exception and a 2nd round draft pick to a team under the cap like Charlotte or for a contract that can be cut like say Livingston's with the Clippers, because he's already gotten his backup PF/C with the Howard deal. This should not be that hard to do.

This probably makes more sense than adding Howard without trimming the roster at all.

So you are saying that Juwan signed an extension with the Wolves?

He was already going to earn $6,883,800 for this year and $7,375,500 for next year.

Why would you cut the 31st pick Carl Landry?

    Wolves trying to trade Howard
    Pioneer Press

Article Last Updated: 08/22/2007 11:18:19 PM CDT

    SHOOTER CHARLEY WALTERS

After receiving what was described as a dignified trade request from Juwan Howard, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said he will try to accommodate the power forward, who was acquired in June as part of a three-team deal. Howard initially made the request to Wolves vice president Kevin McHale.

The Wolves are talking to three teams about potential trades in an attempt to deal players with longer-term contracts. But because of contract complexities, a deal could take until training camp in October.

The Wolves are seeking draft picks and/or younger players.

Howard, who agreed to a $7 million, two-year contract this summer hoping to play with Kevin Garnett, respectfully asked the Wolves to facilitate a trade after Garnett was dealt last month to Boston. Howard, who is near the end of his career, would like to play for a title contender.

It doesn't mention anything about him being signing with the Wolves for 2 years. I also check www.timberwolves.com news archive, since the trade and no mention of it.

tiger, i think you are sorely mistaken.

and why do people keep trying to work him into a trade? if howard is bought out there is no need to pull a trade

If I were Minnesota Owner I would fire McHale immediately for making a trade like this. Also Landry is the 31st pick and has a lot of upside potential. He's from the Big-10 and led his team in scoring. That means a hell of a lot more to me coming out of one of these major conferences than Bryce Drew coming out of Valpraiso. You don't just cut Landry.

Juwon can be that locker room guy we are missing rightnow.
He's still an effective player, but he needs mins to produce,
needs shots to get into games. He's not an instant player.
It's a call for the FO guys, belance between him and the young bloods.
To me Landry is not impressive at all, but we bought him.
It would look bad if you just bought something and then dump it.

So explain to me why the Rockets would do a deal like this? We're already slightly over the luxury tax, we all know that. You've already pointed out that a team can release Sura and Lucas and save around $3M. So, as far as the luxury tax is concerned those three guys would only cost us $3M this year if we release Sura and Lucas (Sura $1M + Lucas $500K + Reed $1.5M). So, you're telling me that we'd trade what is a bottom line of $3M in salary and we're going to take back a full $6.8M in salary?

I highly doubt that the Rockets will go an additional $3.8M over the luxury threshold just to acquire Juwon Howard. That would cost them and additional $7.6M in real money.

I think that any moves the Rockets make will be to get us under the luxury tax threshold, not farther above it. The only way that I see Howard back in a Rockets uni is if the TWolves cut him and then he signes for the vet minimum. That way the league would reimburse the Rockets somewhere around $400K and Howard would only cost the Rockets $700K in actual salary and towards the cap (since he's a 10 yr vet signing for the minimum).

No team in the league is far enough under the cap to cover Alston's salary. Charlotte is slightly over the cap after their acquisition of Jason Richardson for a draft pick and the resigning of Gerald Wallace and Walter Herrmann.

How would trading for Shaun Livingston and cutting him save us any money? His contract is guarenteed so we could certainly cut him, but we'd still have to pay him and he'd count against the cap.

    1. The Rockets can probably still use Juwan Howard, at the very least as an insurance policy in case of either injury or Scola needing time to adjust to the NBA (or totally bombs in the NBA... unlikely, but anything is possible).

Juwan is a decent midrange shooter with good ball handling and passing skills, which would fit in pretty well with a high-post kind of role. His problem has always been his lack of mobility not fitting in with Yao.

    2. The question is then whether it would make economic sense for them to bring him back, given the projected role. Could they dump enough salaries of their own in a trade or sign him for cheap enough after a buyout to make it make sense?

    3. There's also the question of whether he wouldn't prefer somewhere else. Rockets will likely win, and he knows many of the guys, but will he not want more minutes (and get them) somewhere else? I mean, Boston can probably give 20 mpg at least. Perhaps Detroit if Webber goes else where?

Howard fits Adelman's system and he is a talented player, a vet, and has played with this team for several years. I would welcome him back!

That's called being an enforcer. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Hakeem, Dr. J, they have all been in a number of tussles and got technicals and they are all professionals.
