Trading Bonzi for a marginal role player is a terrible idea. Rockets management better not be this stupid.

Per Yao #1: "If we are after Atkins, I think we should make Memphis throw in Alexander Johnson. He is a long athletic PF, and Memphis really has no room for him with Gasol, Warrick, and Lawrence Roberts. It would work for Sura alone since Johnson makes so little. Although we have to many bodies so throwing in Padgett or someone might clear up a spot. Memphis wont do this though unless they are just trying to throw Atkins away." Good post. Alkexander Johnson would be a good upgrade over Padgett.

If you want another super foul prone PF, sure let's try to get A. Johnson. But seriously I doubt they would trade someone they just drafted for a TE or 2nd round pick.
This would be the TE for Atkins. Maybe JL3 and cash thrown in. I don't see Bonzi in it all unless JVG feels there is no chance for him contributing within the team--that would be JVG call. I can't see Memphis wanting Wells given their history, nor many other teams given Bonzi's season so far. As for a PT problem among Rafer, Atkins, Head, Snyder and Wells in the 1 & 2--that is a problem I'd like to have. We still don't know the roll and minutes for Snyder or Bonzi, if they get healthy and playoff ready (particularly Bonzi). Head is a better shooter than either, and with Atkins/Chucky as true vet PGs Head will probably gets most his minutes at the SG, particularly when we run a spread the floor and hit the 3 offense centered around Yao & Tmac offense. Putting Atkins, Head and Battier around Yau and Tmac makes an quick team, and impossible to contain offensively--probably what we want when Phx, Dallas and even SA (when TD goes to the 5) play their playoff small ball. Also we don't need a big PG. Tmac and Head can kind of cover that. Sometimes we do have a problem with the small super quicks like Terry and Parker--Chucky is as good as any other match-up for them defensively, and at least makes them play offense harder than versus Rafer. We do need another PG with experience, who takes care of the ball, good FT shooter and excellent off the ball player--some vet to help us close out games and relieve Rafer while also providing similar stability (JL3, VS and Head as PGs just don't provide that stability). Based on how Atkins teamed up with Kobe, I think he would fit well here.
Why do you think Atkins is super fast. I dont think he is any quicker then Alston and definitely not quicker then JL3. Also he is a terrible defender, and a shoot first PG. Why are you so high on him. As for Head cover big PG, the second the other team has a big guard being played by Head, he gets posted up and killed down low. How can you think he is the answer to a big guard.
Just because a guy can shoot from multiple spots on the floor doesn't make him a shoot first PG. Atkins has had good A/TO ratios over his career, and his assists per 48 minutes this year are comparable to Rafer's. What he is doing much better than Alston offensively (they both are decent/average 3 point shooters) is coverting from multiple spots on the floor, drawing fouls, and converting fouls after penetrating the defense or breaking his man down. Guards I am really concerned about for the playoffs are the superquick small PGs, Terry, Parker, Harris, etc. (Could put in Barbosa, Nash, Williams, Billips and Wade in there as also being potential playoff match-up problems for us with excellent quicks but they are not small). Alston is not bad against these guys defensively, but he needs help. JL3 may be super quick, and VS may be quick, but they are too inexperienced--this work against them both in terms of vets working them over to create space, and the rooks not getting the benefit of the doubt from refs--a fact of NBA life. A combination of Alston/Atkins--both IMO have experience and good quickness for PGs, would make me much more comfortable against the quicker PGs defensively going into the playoffs, and also Atkins in particular is an offensive cover that makes them spend much more energy and effort, another way to slow them down and lesson the mismatch. Of course Head is a small 2, I meant Head being an option for covering the opponents 1 (works best with Tmac on the floor where they share many PG duties). Head might be the best guy we have to address opponents with combinations of quicks, size and strength (some of whom play the 1 exlusively, other do sometimes) like Barbosa, Nash, Williams, Wade, Billips.
Per 48 minutes are one of the most useless stats ever. Nobody every plays 48mins so why does it even matter. The only thing I see Atkins doing better than Rafer is shooting.
They're fine if you know how you're using them. Some people prefer 40 mins because it's a more realistic possibility, but its use is the same. It's a rate. It's not meant to say a guy could do that, and there inherent problems, especially for people who play a particularly high energy game (for us, think Hayes or JL3), but it allows you to compare, in this case turnover and assist rates. Think of it like this. Suppose two players (in a vaccuum) both average 3.00 turnovers a game. One of them plays 25 minutes a game, and the other plays 35 minutes. Who would you consider more turnover prone? Obviously the guy who plays fewer minutes. Rate stats just normalize this. It doesn't work as well for guys who get minimal minutes, but it's generally a decent comparative tool for rotation players and can give you an idea of how effective a guy is in limited minutes.
It was relevant because Atkins was labeled a shoot first PG (implying he isn't a real PG, just an undersized SG). When in fact, Atkins is averaging more assists per 48 than any Rocket who had played PG minutes (Rafer, JL3, Head or VSpan). (Actually Tmac has the best assist numbers per 48 of all the above.) Further, Atkins has a better A/TO ratio than anyone on the Rockets roster (including our assist leader Tmac). This doesn't support the argument that Atkins doesn't pass the rock when another has a better shot or is TO prone--what we often associate with "shoot-first PGs". Well if this includes midrange shooting, shooting off a dribble, fake or on the move, pentraiting the lane, foul shooting, and getting fouled--I agree with you. I think "scoring" is the more appropriate term actually, he is a better (and much more efficient) scorer than Rafer. So Atkins isn't a "shoot first PG", he is a "PG who can shoot". Or if you prefer a "PG who can score". Someone who can both score off the ball efficiently and distribute sounds like a very complimentary backcourt mate of Tmac to me (or if Tmac is playing a point-forward role). And in this case Atkins is getting like 28 minutes, Alston like 37--this is plenty enough sampling. I would be more concerned about such comparisons (Per48) if one guy was a 10 or 15MPG guy--a shorter minute guy can go all out, plays against scrubs, and who opponents may not study much. This isn't the case for either play. Overall, I am not saying Chucky Atkins is a savior. I wouldn't even plan on starting him. But I think if our PG spot was 26 minutes to Alston and 22 Atkins we would get a fresher and more effective Rafer over those 26 or so minutes (I wonder if his 3 ball % drop is in part do to fatigue), and a whole lot more punch and stability (veteran leadership and care with the ball) out of Atkins 22 minutes than we can get now. Atkins would take major loads off Rafer (in all ways, Rafer is our only vet PG) and Tmac (take some ball handling, distrubuting and scoring pressure off) that would keep them fresher down the stretch.
Looking at the stats, Atkins seems like one of Memphis's bright spots this season. I am wondering what we could possibly offer for them to give us Atkins. Also, Atkins seems to be having a better season than Mike James. I think this would be a solid aquistion as long as we didn't give up Bonzi.
Wait for Piston to officially acquire C-Webb now that he decided he wants to go to Piston and then Pistons might trade some big for Bonzi! rather than trading bozi for Chucky Atkins. im really pumped if this is true- he is shooting very well and showing his skills on TNT right now... really matching phoenix's intensity!!!
Before the very first Rocket game on either Rockets Live or Insider MATT BULLARD stated that the Rockets will make a significant trade before the trade deadline. He sounded very positive about it like he already knew what was going to happen. Does anybody have that on tape? It stuck in my brain when he said that. When did we get Bonzi? Who were the Rockets talking to back then other than Memphis
I never see his game. But isn't our backcourt already very small? Don't you feel sad when you watch Smush Park shoting over Riffer as will?
