If I were in charge, I would give every American over the age of 18 4k per month for the next 3 months, If people are essential and they have to work, this would simply be ON TOP of what they already make. Enjoy the bonus and thanks for the hard work, consider it hazard pay. I would freeze mortgages, credit cards, rent, utilities and bank loan repayment - put them on pause - and push them back 3 months with ZERO penalty. Once we beat down the virus, and folks went back to work, it would fade away.....over time for those that lost their jobs....but right away for those that still had one. Say 6 months.... This would save the economy. DD
Imagine millions of American having near 8K in the bank at the end of this thing. Now all those bills can be paid on time for a few months. . .that helps those industries ease back into things Imagine what possible debts could actually be paid rather than charged off Imagine people having ease of mind for once Imagine what potential new micro business may come out of it Rocket River
I'll tell them this to their face, and in sure they'd agree. They wouldn't be mad, and they're not going to not take advantage. I don't blame them. My point is that, during an economic crisis, people should in no way, shape, or form, be making more money to not work (and drive the economy) than they would working. I think they should make what they normally would make. That alone created a burden on the government. Why is the government going out of it's its way to pay people more money than what their employer would? It makes no economical sense whatsoever.
It was necessary to give more than what most states minimum was, but it is ridiculous they can make more not working.
Yes. Maybe they thought that would be too complicated? But states already are figuring average wage as it relates to their own portion of unemployment, so seems they would already have the data.
Corporations do it all the time . .. . failed and get bailed out . .what is the difference? Is this not what we did for Farmers because we put restrictions on China . . . . You would support that? Universal Basic Income? Rocket River
Two wrongs don't make it right. I hate that many will profit off of this, while others are actually hurting.
My god, the poorest among us may end up being overpaid for a little while after being devastated by a pandemic. The horror!
Of course I would support UBI. I think it is the ONLY way to raise minimum wage without screwing over the middle class. I'm one of the bigger proponents of Andrew Yang on this board. I think the guy is brilliant. He SHOULD have been the Democratic candidate, but the party is mired in the status quo. It's funny, because Yang's main argument and policy is being brought to the forefront right now. If the Dems had nominated him, as they should have, he'd be a shoe in.
@EddieWasSnubbed there was no way to allow people to get exactly what they were making before. That horse keeps getting beat and the mother****ers been dead for weeks.
I appreciate your comments, as well as everyone in here (even @SamFisher ). After all, this is just a debate forum. We're all brothers, in a sense. My argument has been stated. It's a governmental failure to be paying people more than what they would normally make during an economic collapse. It makes no financial sense. If you're going to go there, go there. Pay everybody. Enact a UBI, which is what we're headed towards. That's my argument. My wife and I go to work every day, putting ourselves at risk, essentially on the front lines. We have a 2 year old that we come home to, and potentially, another one on the way. We get no kind of hazard pay for this. We pay for childcare. And we still make well below the national average for our job titles. $600 extra a week, for each of us, would go a LONG way. Hell, it'd bring us close to making the national average for our positions. That's my position. I know so many more like me. It's not fully about me though. What I'm saying is that it should have been a stimulus OR $600 a week. We should not be doing both. And if we're going to go the socialism route, take care of everybody. What they're doing makes no sense from a financial or economic standpoint.
I understand, I'm just using it as a basis. If you're getting 70% of your normal salary on unemployment, how hard is it to extrapolate that out? How about reverting to last year's tax returns? This seems like a copout. $600 goes a LOT further in the rust belt than in California. Surely there's a way to edit that.
I am glad we can have a reasonable discussion on this because I can see your argument and I am not totally opposed, I just don't begrudge the extra money the unemployed are getting. I will agree that it is a little haphazard, I also think the 1200 check was to take care of everybody.
I'll expand on that. UBI to all employed workers (those on legal unemployment, as well as retirees and disabled people...). So many benefits to this, economically. Yang was on it all along.
