I own and manage a few coffee shops in Houston. We pay our employees as well as we can afford to. I would say the average salary with tips is anywhere from $12-$18 an hour. We had to lay off our whole staff by the end of March. With the extra $600 weekly in addition to their regular unemployment benefits, pretty much all of them are making more sitting at home then they would be working. If we wanted to open our shops back up, we would have trouble convincing any of them to come back. And I can't really blame them either.

You people are getting bent out of shape, some people rent is like 2k a month. Let's get real here guys. Plus I hear it's not like this for everyone, and it's not lasting but what 2 more months. Jobs will hopefully spruce up once again, everything will be back to provety level for us in due time.

I find the narrative of the small business employee having a higher quality of life as odd. It is used as a justification for low wages and to be honest, it is not a valid one. There are many small businesses that treat their employees terrible.

OMG. I cannot sleep at night. This is potentially the greatest injustice of my life time. I used to be upset about the millions killed in the Iraq war , mass encarceration , or the bailouts for the Wall Street crooks, or climate change etc. , but the fact that for a couple of months these barista/ grifters might actually get more is just too much. Just think of the stupid things these grifters will spend money on. I bet they won't even be putting it into their 401 k's like responsible people.

Idk what the hell you are really babbling about. I said I don't begrudge my employees for sitting at home if they are making more. The problem is re-starting the business won't be easy if no one wants to come back. And that hurts everyone long term. We are a small business and I am not some millionaire sitting at home and dining with Mexican industrialists like some on here. I haven't earned anything the past couple of months and the longer this goes on the tougher it will be for all food service establishments.

And then some, considering the percentage of pay they're still getting.

. YOu never said, them but you should stop whining.. because that's the logical conclusion of your "everybody who is suffering should suffer $600 more than me!" hypothesis.

The economy is so super ****ed, the government is taking meager steps for temporary relief with the **** tools it has to balance that concern with the public health emergency, and you're worried about the unemployed lucky duckies and their 600 bucks and insanely bleak prospects for having a roof over their heads over the Greater Depression that is happening as we speak

Sam is the Trader Jorge of the left. There's no analysis or thought there - he's going to rant and rave and make things up so he can b**** and act morally superior to you. The main difference is TJ is clearly an ignore-worthy troll. On the other extreme, glynch clearly doesn't understand anything about economics, but is not trolling - at least he honestly believes his nonsense. I can't figure out where Sam fits into that scale. He's clearly knowledgable in general, but seems clueless on topics of economics, and you'll be far better off ignoring him and focusing on people who want actual discussions.

Actually they would lose that $600 because you guys reopened, that is part of what the GOP is doing getting people off the government and back to work.

In a similar situation. We can partially reopen (not sure we really want to), but some staff is afraid to come in and other staff are milking their unemployment while they can. Only a couple are in a place where they want to work. So not clear we'd even be able to open. That said, I can't say I'm unhappy about it. Our people got some real relief from the government for once so they stay safe at home and get enough money to pay their bills. For once they don't have a proverbial gun to their heads, work or starve. I'm not interested in blackmailing people to work. When we really do get to the other side of the curve, they'll start wanting to work again

Would have been cheaper to bail people out and not corporations.

Definitely. If I received some help personally, the business would still be okay long term. The entire system is just f'd up.

I really understand your frustration but I you come off as a little bitter because people who don't have jobs are doing better over a 3 month span than you and it comes off as selfish.

How will the country be better if these people don't get that money?

So will the country be better if the stimulus checks are not distributed since it will cost taxpayers less.

You don't account for what these people are spending that money on and how that benefits the country as a whole downstream.

Your argument seems to boil down that you are mad because some people will be making more money out of work than they would be working and you have to still work.

They only get this money for 3 months what then?

We know many are afraid to come back and rightfully so. I am also not ready to go out yet. You don't think a whole bunch of hourly workers will find any and all excuse to not report to work? Scheduling, staff training and dealing with employees is the single toughest part of any foodservice establishment. The current situation will only exacerbate that problem.

    600 week I think = 2400 a month.
That is significant amount of money

Who opposes people coming out of this better than going in
    Ain't Bezos making like an extra 20something billion more. . . .
