The 600 a week is on top of the 70% they pull of their Normal salary for unemployment. So, no, I'm not trying to say that at all. Yes, money spends as money. But my wife and I are going to work and not getting an extra $600 a week. So, we come out basically making $15/hour less, each in the sense that everyone else is essentially getting handed that $15/hr. Don't even get me started on the grocery store workers, who are more at risk than some healthcare workers, that don't even make $600/week. On top of that, my family is not home together all week. We can't spend time as a family unit like people who are laid off. We're paying for a babysitter. We can't just use extra money we're not used to making to do home improvement projects like many family members and friends are. If anything, those that are working should be getting the $600/week extra. I know that's going to sound like an unpopular, entitled opinion, but it's truth. Those that are laid off should be getting 90/100% of their normal pay, for sure, and the country would be better off for it. It's cost taxpayers less. It'd give people incentive to get back to work. It's better all around. No way they should get a supplemental handout that makes people make more money being out of work.
The vast majority of people laid off so far are in the service industry. The amount they get varies by state, but in Texas, if you made about $28/hr or less ($58,000/yr), you're getting more in unemployment. This unemployment system essentially rewards big businesses at the expense of small business and essential employees. Big businesses: employees are totally replaceable, so when Macy's wants to re-open, they can force their employees to come back or they lose their unemployment benefits. If the employee doesn't come back, they just get someone else. Small businesses: employees are more like family, and this system pits employees' interests vs the business' interests. Small business owners have to decide whether to call their employees back into work knowing that either the business will suffer or the employees will suffer. Small businesses often pay less than bigger companies (and no health insurance), but the tradeoff is that employees have a better quality of life and enjoy their work environments more (think of a Barnes & Noble employee vs one that works in a family-owned bookstore, for example). It will permanently harm the relationship that is vital to the success of small businesses. That favors big ones when the small ones go out of business and ultimately hurts quality of work environments for employees. Instead of having the choice of B&N or the family bookstore, that employee will then only have the option of B&N. Essential Employees: these are the people screwed over the most. If you worked for $12 in an essential store, you might get a small pandemic bonus and make $14 while having to put yourself at risk daily. You don't have the option of leaving because you wouldn't be eligible for unemployment. If you just happened to worked at GAP instead of Target, you now make $21/hr and get to stay at home, not putting yourself at risk, having 40 extra hours a week or pursue anything else (developing skills, etc), and all the while saving gas/etc. The SamFishers and others of the world that simplify this down to "wages are low! companies are bad!" don't grasp basic economics - they see one problem and put it all in a political lens, but have very little understanding of the bigger picture. These are the same people that railed on TARP and other things because they could only see 1 month into the future instead of 1 year. The thing they claim to hate is exactly the policy the support. This setup of pitting employees' interests against employers' interests ultimately rewards big companies and wealthy people, with a short-term benefit to people lucky enough to be non-essential. In the longterm though, both the essential and nonessential workers get screwed over along with small businesses.
This Corporations getting 2.2 Trillion and banks getting even more but We only care when PEOPLE get money esp if they not already RICH Rocket River
Maybe you'll be one of the lucky duckies who get laid off. I bet they are living large and high on the hog, since half the hog slaughterhouses are closed.
The samfishers of the world don't understand how many minimum wage workers the @Major s of the world employ in their retail ventures and need to morally justify to themselves for employing and underpaying but also considering themselves as less complicit because he read the Wealth of Nations, like, twice. Frankly if the past 6 weeks haven't shown you how insanely broken the system is, I don't know what else to say. You're the equivalent of a Supreme Court Justice (or actually 5 of them) who tries to **** over black people as much as humanly possible but denies that systemic racism exists, and they're just deciding the cases in front of them and calling balls and strikes, it's just the pitcher threw 674 strikes in a row. It's all eminently reasonable on a case by case basis, you see? You're a big boy. You know what you're doing. As do i. You're not the victim here. But if you think you are, feel free to vote R in November.
I wouldn't complain. It'd be safer. I'd spend more time with my family. I could do things around the house. When you couple in that I wouldn't need childcare, I'd make more. Too bad I'm essential and always will be.
Change jobs to one that's non-essential then. You're a free market advocate, at least on this narrow issue. That shouldn't be too difficult to do. Btw, the depression will be coming for your job too, if the same assholes who opposed expanded benefits oppose state and local government "bailouts' What will you say then, I'm all good with the standard benefit?
I didn't read this page before I posted. But I believe the reason it happened like this is because of antiquated software across the board in most of the 50 states. There was no way to that with time constraints etc So they did a flat increase across the board.
Major eluded to this but in Texas your benefits are based on income and I think the top is $12 an hour. It's not based on hourly wage but the total amount you made the previous year do people who didn't work much can get very little hourly pay
Some of my furloughed workers have begun to receive regular unemployment benefits. No one has received the 600 bonus yet, but I figure some people have got it. I read that the processing is just really backed up.
I have a cousin that is but he's been unemployed since January. He's in a happy place for the next 3 months.
No depression will be coming for my job. That I am certain of. Especially as an essential worker. I'm not sure why you're coming on with the claws out, to be honest. What I'm saying is that people should be supplemented to their normal wages. Not making extra money. I'm not sure what there is to defend about people making extra money to stay at home and not have a job, to be honest, because it's indefensible. My family is benefitting from the extra $600, by the way. I don't feel they should be.
Of a state or locality? Guess what the people who, like you, oppose unemployment benefit expansion proposed for you last week Anyway, humor me, since it's so lucrative, why don't you want to quit your job and join the 30 million newly unemployed- do you think it might be a difficult job market these days? So after 2 months of pandemic you don't get the idea of having people stay home? Embarrassing. Maybe they should just inject some bleach and start pounding the sidewalks. If you hate your job quit it. Don't hate on the millions who are ****ed for being slightly less ****ed to the tune of 600 measly dollars, beefsteak.
Attention laid off parasites Time to start knocking on doors according to @EddieWasSnubbed , @Major, Lindsay Graham and this guy:
@SamFisher At the risk of being made fun for having been unemployed (I'm working now, luckily for an essential retailer), unemployment is for basic needs. If people need food stamps they can get them. Stimulus check are for stimulus
Many of my clients/friends in the restaurant industry are now struggling bringing their employees back because of the extra $600. I don’t blame the employees, do what’s best for you. Tough though. I may dust off my decade old bartending skills to make up for my 25% pay cut.
