Yeah that trade today made no sense. I just really, really hope they got something else up their sleeve or there will be a lot of dissapointed fans.
you are. Dadak is talking about a trade exception, not a mid-level exception, which is what we signed Shandon, Mo, Pike, etc with.
Question - Isn't the trade exception closer to $7m? Rice @ $9.6m - Amaechi @ #2.6m = $7.0 What am I missing here? BTW, one of the major complaints of this deal was losing next years #1 to Utah. Since this TE can be used to help any over the cap team(s) consummate a trade, isn't there a chance we could get a future first for brokering a deal? IMO, this prospect is enhanced by the fact that the TE can be split into multiple pieces. IOW, we could use $3.5m in one deal and $3.5m in a totally seperate deal.
Like Crisco said, it wasn't that trade exception. It was the injury exception from when Mo T tore his achille's tendon and was gonna be out for the season. The league those out occasionally to help out teams who got screwed by an injury in the offseason.
I doubt you're bursting anyone's bubble since you aren't the first one to mention that in this thread. Have confidence in the team. If an opportunity comes up to use that exception to get a player that is going to contribute, I think it will be done. But just having the exception doesn't mean you have to use it.
I don't think we'll be seeing Mobley or Cato packaged with the TE, unless we're aquiring a top tier player which likely won't be happening. Someone like Moochie seems more likely to be included in a TE package to a team that may be looking to dump some salary. Portland or Indiana perhaps?
I seriously doubt this trae was made to get Garnett, or dump Mobley. This trade was made to get under the luxury tax while signing Jimmy Jackson.
You're exactly right. Although Rice's contract was for $9.5 million, it would've ended up costing much more because of the lux tax. Also, it seems like the only people being traded now are guys with gigantic salaries like Van Exel and Jamison.
Actually I knew that, the question I was trying to ask was: can we combine the MLE and the TE in a trade scenario?
I think all you people stating that any combination of Cat/Cato and MoTaylor to get KG are just losing it. If and ONLY if KG stated he didn't want to re-sign in Minny then we would have to say goodbye to Stevie Franchise. An All-Star franchise player along with probably Griffin and the exception. BUT ITS not happenin guys. Of course its nice to dream of the possibilities..... Yao Mo Garnett Jim Jackson ??? ( who cares?? KG can play point forward ) mmmm... ok Back to reality.... Portland is a team that is trying to lower payroll and get some great players. Ruben Patterson would be a perfect SF for this team and we could really use the power play of a guy like Dave Davis. If we offered some trade bait we might be able to pry away Rasheed, hell they were about to trade old as Mutombo and PF in the East Kenyon martin for him.
Putting on my "please please please" cap, Houston actually CAN theoretically land KG. It's not happening though. Think about this: with the Lakers this and next year, I doubt Minnie can actually win it all. After two years Spree will be hobbling on his last knee. Yao >>> Kandiman JJ < old Spree Cat >= Wally world Moochie << Sam (I left SF out for a reason here) Rox Bench >> Wolves Bench So outside KG the teams are pretty equal, with Houston having far more upside. Only 2 teams outside Minnie can sign KG. Utah and Houston. Utah for obvious reasons, Houston because of the 6.5 - 7 million trade exception. So KG can let his contract expire take a pay cut to say oh 21 million and sign 1 year with Utah and we'll trade SF + trade exception (or better yet SF + Cato) for KG. After which, KG can sign a contract extension + 10% pay raise with Houston, bringing him close to the 24 million he makes right now. Why would Utah help Houston you say? Well, who wouldn't pull the trigger on this trade? They have no chance for the next couple years and they can't attract a good FA. There's no way in hell KG would stay with them (if he can't win with Rasho, Wally and good scrubs he has chemistry with, why would he try with AK and Harp). They get a young all-star staring PG (+ an above average big men which they desperately need if Cato is involved). After the end of the season, with SF, they CAN ACTUALLY ATTRACT GOOD FA's. SF + AK + Harp + early lottery pick + 2 conditional first rounders + big contract for being under the cap will attract a lot of interest. Remember what SF + early lottery pick got us (lucky hand Steve)? With Minnie losing KG they'd be right back in playoff contention. Not that all this will happen. Good go daydream though...
now that we have money, what is the realisitic list of people that can play for us? our weakest spots are at the three and four. whos on the block and whos a FA next year? and please, dont mention KG, i am quite aware that he exists.
that's the point, nyquil82. KG is available, of course. however, should anyone fall out of favor with their team, that fits our needs, we now have a realistic means of acquiring them. this even applies to max contract players. we've been hamstrung for the past few years due to ridiculous contracts to motay, moochie, cato & rice. while rice's contract ($9,000,000) would have come off of the books next year, we still would have been over the cap. moving rice now and picking up jimmy jackson not only upgrades our small forward position, but still leaves us with trade flexibility. we can package that ~$7 mill with our most tradeable asset (mobley), a BYC player (francis), or with an overpaid player (cato) to acquire help. every year, there seems to be some disgruntled star that considers leaving his team. we are now in a position to make a bid for such a player. it could be KG. it could be rasheed wallace. it could be jermaine. we don't know. but we do know that we are one of the very few teams that can make realistic offers for players of that ilk. even if we don't make any moves at all with the TE, we have upgraded our small forward position, and reduced our payroll. that, in my book, is a positive move.
