Can someone let me know when the interview starts? I can't listen until then, they might drive me to start drinking way too early this morning. Edit: never mind... They aren't doing that bad now.. they should screen their callers better
Lol. What don't you like about 610? I don't listen to them personally, but I'm not sure what's wrong with them. Also, they are crazy if they think Morey is going to give them any hints close to what they are going to actually do tomorrow.
Interesting, he thinks the trade rumors and such are about 50% truth 50% smoke screen. Puts all that stuff into perspective a bit.
yeah, you aren't missing anything. don't understand why he even agreed to be on right now. doesn't seem like we're gonna get anything besides cookie-cutter, vague answers.
I didn't know that! Only the top three teams that win the lottery actually change their standings. Everyone from four down is reverse regular season standings!
*Lot of talk about movement. Talent level drops off fairly shallow and because of that opinions are varying widely. *asks about how trade money for pick works? The cash is separate from cap. *don’t talk about who we work out. Try to keep it under raps so that they can see where players might go for other teams. Work out 50-70 players a year and it is one of the most in the league. *players from Europe that impress? Dalinari (spelling?) will be gone by their pick. *thinks Minnesota is trying to trade. Thinks info about players status falling is about 50-50 true/bs. *Best athlete available or need? Rockets lean towards best impact player. Picks generally help over 4 years. For a team like us the odds are between 1 and 4 and 1 and 5 about whether you get a good player. Gotta see how they fit with roster and system. You don’t want to pass on what you think will be an impact player. *Frustrated about Jazz picking ahead of Rockets. He talked to the league about it. After lottery it goes in order of regular season standings. Says Jazz is a well run team and pick well. Last few years they have picked players ahead of the rockets that they were interested in. *Likes to meet them to know their personality. NBA has smallest locker rooms so 1 or 2 characters can impact the floor. *Made fun of 610 am 3 on 3 basketball team. Says Yao is doing great. He is looking to get final doctor’s approval this week and when he gets it he’s going to work with team China. *At #25 in perfect world what to look for in this coming years squad? Ideally player that can shoot, athletic, big, long, and plays good defense. Your choosing what strengths you want in a player and which skills you are ok with being bad when picking at 25.
My summary: Shallow talent drop off. Differing opinions. Presents opportunity to trade Money for a pick. Cash is separate from the cap. Don't talk about who we work out. Work out the most players in the league. Europe trip. Gallinari very good. Players might be there when we pick. Won't reveal anything. Rumors are 50/50. Teamed up with minnesota beacuse they have two early seconds. Get a feel for a talent at that level. Best athlete/need at 25? Who's the best impact player. Usually results over 4 years. 3 contributing rookies immediately is quite rare. Pretty good player with low risk over probably better player with high risk. Talked about picking after utah, the team that beat us in the playoffs. Not really fair. Would prefer lottery order then by playoff/regular season finish. Workouts/meetings important to see the personality of the player if they will fit the team. Used often for tiebreaking on skill sets. Meetings also allow them to see if they can do certain things that their college system did not allow them to do. Yao update: Yao is fine. Will get final check up this week. If positive, he will head to China. What characteristics would you want at 25 to help this team's squad? Player who can shoot, be atheltic, be long, be big, can attack the basket. You will not get all of these, they will have some major weaknesses. ------------------ Daryl Morey doesn't reveal pretty much anything.
One of the sportscasters mentioned, "Clutchfans isn't going to be happy" referring to the vagueness of that interview. Lol He's right for the most part too.
Anybody else think, that at the beginning, Mr. Morey sounded... a bit drunk? XD But anyways, he didn't really tell us what we didn't already know.
I think something he is slightly wrong about, is that the pick can be average at everything, but not exceptional at some things. However are needs are a athletic guy, who can shoot and attack the bucket. Our pick will not be playing 20 minutes a game. Hopefully our pick has a high enough basketball IQ to quickly learn and fit into teh team defence.
