I understand that, but you have to give up talent to get it. People on this board want a 3rd scorer, want an upgrade to a PG.. but don't want to trade any of the blue chips we have (Scola, Battier). It's extremely rare to nab a significant player for a bunch of scrubs, so realistically we have to look at giving up a good player for depth.

We lose Scola, but gain an upgraded PG (possibly future stud?) and a third scorer. Those two assets offset the risk of losing Scola, IMO. Then you add to that, that we have Landry coming back, the dropoff at our starting PF spot will not be that drastic. When you lose a small dropoff at one position (PF) and gain big production at other spots (PG and bench), it's well worth it. I actually don't even think we're giving them enough. I'd include Brooks, but they already have enough young PGs they don't know what to do with.

For those of you who don't know, Landry can't be included in any draft day deal. (I don't think). He's a free agent, and we can't S-n-T him until July 1st.. and we can't combine another player with him if we do S-n-T him. So basically, the trade has to include Scola. The Grizzlies have no use for Battier, so he can't be substituted for Scola. There's no one else on this team outside of the big two that the Grizz would want. Scola gets you Mike Miller and #5 - I'm all for it.

EDIT: Looking at Crash's proposal, I'll change mine to:

    Scola/Bjax/Francis/Head/25th/Draft rights to Eliyahu

    for

    Miller/Cardinal/5th pick

I know I'm going to get "why would you want Cardinal!?!?" post -- bottom line is, we don't want him. But it probably makes Memphis a lot more inclined to pull the trigger -- they've made no secret about wanting out of that contract. With this, they get three expiring contracts, the young PF to pair with Gasol, a late round 1st pick to use on a project, and another Euro they can bring over in time. I think this is a better deal for them than the previous one, without really hurting us too much. If this went down, I'd expect Morey to get into the early 2nd round to pick up Hendrix and another PF.

I cant start a new post cause i am too new...but I have been thinking over two trade scenarios that are both possible.

Of all the trade rumors the one that most intrigues me is is Wallace and Rip for Tmac and Hayes. However, if detroit is steadfast in keeping rip...what if we took billups and Wallace. Yes, this leaves us depleted at at the 2 completely. If we can then trade battier and draft pick for ben gordon or brooks/alston and B jackson for mike miller wed be looking at a pretty good team.

However the next best choice I think.,..would be trading B jax and someone for Varrejo and the 19th pick. This gives us the back up to yoa. Also, gives a 50 percent chance of signing someone that can help this year...or trade the 19th and 25th pick to move up to ensure a rush type player.

    what do you guys think?

I think I'm glad you can't make new threads. The trade scenarios with the Pistons have been thoroughly discussed in another thread. The second trade possibility might not be accepted in NBA Live.

Not to be a dick, but this totally reaffirms Clutch's decision to disallow new posters from starting threads. Billups and Wallace for McGrady? Are you serious?

A handshake deal. 5 days later and S&T for could be on as long as the Grizzlies don't sign their draft pick.

I don't think they'll trade Miller over expirings. Their GM's reputation won't be able to handle another lashing. Also going by jersey sales Gay isn't enough of a drawcard for the crowds.

S&T Landry + cash considerations for Cardinal + draft rights to no.5

They wanted Varejao for the MLE last season. So maybe they'd pay that much for Landry?

They're not trading Miller for expirings: they're trading him for Scola. They wanted Scola for him at the trade deadline for this season. Morey commented on how the asking price for Miller was too high. So you're right, with the backlash they got from the Gasol trade, they're not trading Miller for peanuts. But Scola isn't peanuts - he's exactly who they wanted. My trade basically does the Miller-Scola deal, while taking Cardinals contract in exchange for expirings and lands the Rockets the 5th pick. I think this is pretty realistic.

As far as your suggestion, wouldn't that also be contingent on Landry agreeing to the deal? Not that he wouldn't turn down the MLE money though. I would think it'd take more than that to the land the fifth pick in the draft. If I'm Memphis, I'm wanting expiring contracts and a young player in return for Cardinal. Simply getting out of that contract wouldn't be incentive enough to send the 5th pick in the draft with him. I think that's why NYK was linked to them, offering Rose (expiring) and David Lee. I don't think Landry is good enough to warrant losing the 5th pick for. They have no use for Aaron Brooks, Luther Head is a negative asset: we have no one else.

I just know if I'm Memphis, I don't lose my fifth pick for a player with knee problems in college and the NBA. Cardinal doesn't make Marbury money, so I'm not sure on how truly desperate they are to get out from under that contract. I guess we'll see soon enough.

I just wish Morey would look at shaking things up. I don't think this team is good enough to contend as is: we need to trade one of our big pieces for more depth and talent. If he stays pat this off-season.. I think it'll be another first round and out year. Even if we get out of the first round and lose in the second, I'd consider this season a failure. The McGrady-Yao window is closing: our goals should be a little higher than getting out of the first round.

LongTimeFan: I'm not sure a high lottery pick is what this team needs at this point as a contender, unless it was for a guy like Mayo. With that said, I think I would consider that proposed deal you suggested, reason being that I don't see any better viable alternatives to make use of the Bobby Jackson expiring.

We're really overvaluing that asset and our perception is skewed by Gasol - in essence, there exists a belief that a prime time star will fall into our laps with enough patience. As it stands, few guys of note look to be on the market, and except for Brand, the potential upside of Miller+#5 is probably higher than these third tier stars. Most importantly though, there are numerous other teams out there holding expiring contracts even larger than BJ's. It's a seller's market and the supply is pretty weak quality.

I was going by the OP where they said the Grizzlies pick was up for grabs to any team willing to give up cash ($3M cash considerations I'm guessing) and take on Cardinal's contract.

Point gaurd is the hardest position to transition to from the college level to the NBA lvl. If we do pick up a point gaurd with the 5th pick, it'll take him at least 1 full season to get acclimated. That is assuming that he is Chris Paul/Duron Williams type player. Even Tony Parker only showed flashes his rookie year when he was announted the starter.
A point gaurd IMHO will probably contribute his rookie year, but not with the kind of impact we are expecting till at least 1-3 years down the line.

I agree with a lot of what you said, except the lottery pick part. The reason I'm so high on it is my personal opinion of positions in the NBA: I feel like in today's NBA, point guard is the most important position. I was really pushing a Tmac for #1 trade to take Rose, but that's unrealistic at this point. Getting Bayless might not put us over the top next year.. but in 2 years? 3? I think a great PG is more valuable than any other position on the court (Chris Paul, Deron Williams). If we can get a possible elite PG and Mike Miller to boot for Scola and change, sign me up yesterday.

I like the overall creativity, but it's not really feasible.

Can you think of a time the rights to a recently selected draft pick have been traded in a sign and trade? I can't.

First, Memphis can't negotiate with Landry. Period. Even if the Rockets and Grizzlies were to agree to this deal (and I think they could do better anyhow), Landry would have to agree as well. If Memphis is willing to pay full MLE (which defeats the purpose of getting out of Cardinal's contract), then not really any problems -- unless some other team is willing to do the same. Why would Landry choose to sign in Memphis if a better team were willing to offer him the same money? He doesn't really care if the Rockets can get the #5 overall pick in return for him by choosing Memphis over Indiana (for example). He is the free agent, after all. If Memphis isn't willing to pay, then Landry is basically holding the Rockets hostage for the 5th pick.

Second, with all those caveats in mind -- who do the Grizzlies pick at #5? The player the Rockets want? The player they want? The player with the most value in an alternative trade?

Teams just don't make trades contingent on the players involved being willing to go along with the plan.

Think of it this way...We only trade for #5 if OJ mayo is there and if he is not then why give away half our team for him because honestly him beasley and rose are the only sure fire 12 year in the league players
