I'm not sure about the deng pick being sold. How would phoenix wind up with a pic that high when they were winning a lot of games then. I'm going to check that one.

Phoenix was 29-53 that year (2003-04).

    http://www.nba.com/bulls/news/seven_040624.html

They did it for the cash, but also got the top pick in the second round and a first rounder from Chicago the next season (#21 overall - Nate Robinson) ... which they also dumped.

The Deng and Rondo trades involved future picks, as did the Carl Landry trade (2nd rounder).

The Sergio Rodriguez trade was strictly for money.

If we could get to #5 I would love to have R Westbrook. JaVale McGee and Westbrook are the two players in this draft that I like the most. Besides the top 2 of course.

Yeah i checked it out too. phoenix also got rid of the compensation from atl they got for joe johnson. Didnt they get a pick for the kurt thomas for richardson deal? Really, i dodnt want the rox to move up that high, but getting the blazers pick at 13 would be nice. They're really trying to get rid of that pick.

I don't want that high either unless Mayo is there, and I don't think he will be. I think Minny takes Mayo third then tries to work a trade with Miami for Beasley. I think Kevin Love is the guy sitting there at 5. Love, Gordon, Alexander, Westbrook, and possibly Bayless. I'd just as soon have Rush at 13. So maybe if we could trade for #5, we could swing a deal with Portland using the #5 to get their #13 (Rush) and something else. I'd do that and take on Cardinal's contract. I like Westbrook but I just don't see him being ready to make a major contribution this year. I'm not sold on Bayless. We don't need Love. We need a guy we can plug in and get 25-30 quality minutes out of. IF..........we could do this deal with Memphis, and then trade back down and get Rush with the 13th pick and say...Jarrett Jack or possibly Travis Outlaw somehow, I'd call it a season and go to camp with that group.

    Ok, hear me out:

Luis Scola + Bobby Jackson + 2009 1st round pick

    for

    Mike Miller + 5th pick

    ------

    Why Houston:

A lot of fans will automatically reject this because of the sight of Scola's name, but I think we're getting greater talent in return. I'm proposing this trade as long as Jerryd Bayless is on the board. In essence, we're losing our starting PF for the upgrade to PG we've all been clamoring for PLUS the shooter / 3rd scorer everyone wants. That's two big needs for this club solved. We lose Scola, which hurts -- but that can be negated by re-signing Landry, making him our starting PF. This trade would leave us with almost zero leverage in negotiating with Carl, but in the end he'll be back with us. I gave up the 09 pick so we have our 25th pick to get the best big man available: Ibaca, Ajinca, Thompson, Jawai, etc etc.. We can also buy an early 2nd round pick, much like last year, to grab another big man (maybe Hendrix?) Sign Gerald Green for the minimum, and our team is solid through and through

    Bayless/Rafer/AB
    Battier/Miller/Green/Head
    McGrady/Miller/Green
    Landry/Draft Pick/Draft Pick/Hayes
    Yao/Deke/Woods

    Why Memphis:

They wanted what was considered by Houston "an arm and a leg" for Mike Miller. Later we found out that meant Luis Scola. Scola is a young, cheap, good PF they could add to their nucleus. I think he might even help with Marc Gasol's transition to the NBA. Reports are they want to sell the pick - this trade they nab Scola, gain an expiring they can use for a deadline trade for more youth or just let expire, and a future first round pick. Is this better than the Beasley trade for them? No - but we don't know if Miami would do that trade. This might be their third best option.. but when the clock starts, it might be the best option they have - assuming they really want to get out of paying 5th round pick money. I don't think they'd want AB, with the glut at PG they have. They might ask for Head as well, and 2nd round picks -- all which I'd gladly agree to. You can't trade multiple first round picks or else I'd give up more than one 1st rounder.

    Thoughts?

For a #5 pick, I would do a Carl Landry, B-Jax trade for Cardinal plus the #5. This would give the Grizz a cheap upcoming PF while giving the Rocket's the PG they have been looking for! :)

If we are going to trade for the #5 and draft, we've got to draft Joe Alexander. So the trade has to be BJax and expirings, #25, and next year's first rounder for #5 and Cardinal. Take Joe Alexander and go to the house. Joe and Yao speaking Manderin.

By the way, ESPN is also confirming this rumor:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2008/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=MockDraft-080625

    PICK TEAM PLAYER VITALS

    Memphis
    Eric Gordon Position: SG
    Height: 6-3
    Weight: 222
    Age: 19
    School: Indiana

The skinny: For weeks we've been hearing that the Grizzlies are high on Love. He fits a need, is one of the more NBA-ready players in the draft and would be popular in Memphis.

He still could be the pick. But there's a growing chorus saying that the Grizzlies are looking strongly at Gordon -- an athletic, sweet-shooting 2-guard -- with the pick.

Even stronger are rumors that the Grizzlies are talking to a number of teams, including the Knicks, Blazers and Suns, about deals that would send the No. 5 pick to whomever is willing to take Brian Cardinal's awful contract (two years, $13 million left). The latest buzz has the Knicks talking to Memphis about a deal that would send David Lee and the expiring contract of Malik Rose to Memphis for No. 5 and Cardinal.

In other words, it sounds like GM Chris Wallace is, once again, being pushed by ownership to cut payroll.

2 yrs and 13m isnt that bad of a deal for a team like the rox if there was a player they really wanted at 5. U figure rafer, tracy, cardinal and scola all come off at the same time. i just dont think there is a difference from 5 to 25 in this draft.

Cas considerations is $3 million max. Portland paid $3 million for the to the Suns for draft pick that became Rudy Fernandez on top of taking on James Jones's contract.

I see your point IMO the top 4 are Rose,Beasley,Mayo, and Bayless. There are a lot of other good players after that but there doesn't seem to be an enormous drop between 5 and 25.

morey would have to gamble on getting an azubuike, matt barnes, james jones, or posey to replace battier.

that said rocks have no chance if that knicks deal exists. though it'd be interesting to see what the grizzlies do with david lee next year when he's a free agent.

There may not be an enormous drop between 5 and 25. The problem is there is probably only about 3-6 real players between 5 and 25. And if you are a good scout, you should have an idea who they are.

In my humble opinion, I think the players between 5 and 25 that are going to be really good are:
    Love
    Alexander
    Rush
    Ajinca

    I also think
    Bayless
    Westbrook
    Gordon
    Lee
    Chalmers
    Speights
have a shot of being from really good to very solid NBA players.

I think everybody else is a total crapshoot with more busts than NBA players.

So, what the draft really amounts to in my opinion, is for us to really guarantee we have a shot at getting a player that can contribute at a position that we need (either swing or PG), then we really need to be able to trade up into the 5-13 range. Otherwise, the odds of us getting a solid contributor out of this draft are very, very low.

Landry's unproven as a starter. His right knee was no good in college, his left knee was no good in the NBA. He needs to prove his knees can hold up for a full NBA season. Why did his agent fight to have the Rockets be vague about his injury?

You know you cant trade consec 1st rounders. If we were to get into the top 5 Westbrook because of his defensive potential. Im sick of opposing PG's lighting us up.

Does anyone still get bothered by us drafting Luther Head instead of David Lee?
