Thanks for all the input and ideas. One more question for anyone who has a flatscreen... ...how close do you sit to it? I'm planning on sitting 12 feet away from the 50 (or 52)...is that still close enough to have the "immersive" experience? Don't get me wrong- I know that of course I'll still see the picture clearly and all that - but at 12 feet away, does it still have that WOW factor? Or should I consider rearranging room to move the sofa closer?
I say 12 feet is fine for a 50", but maybe just a tad bit on the far side. Scroll down on this page for a recommended viewing distance chart. It's not listed but you can deduce that 52" would be around 11 feet max. http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/ISEO-rgbtcspd/learningcenter/home/tv_faq.html EDIT: Then again I found another site that said about 7' feet is the max recommended for a 52" 1080p. Maybe rearrange for about 9 feet?
hey dough-ku, have you seen the Pioneer Elite KURO?? "Greatest flat Panel EVER" by Hometheatermag http://hometheatermag.com/plasmadisplays/907kuro/
This is typically true. But this particular plasma series by Samsung is phenomenal. Glad I don't have to make this decision. If you can't tell which picture you prefer go with the bigger size or cheaper price... To me the plasma pops more than that LCD but I think thats just me. Also I never dialed in settings into that LCD. So I dunno. Its like trying to decide if Deron Williams or Chris Paul is better...
Totally -- I'm glad you know what I'm going through. I've literally lost 3 hours of work today reading reviews on Amazon, Best Buy, and CNet. I might now make my decision based on something absurd and petty... most TV stands seem to say "good for TVs up to 50 inches," so maybe I'll just get the plasma to fit the cheaper stands. lol I've seen both images, and both look great to my untrained eye. I dunno.
are you gonna get the HD box through your cable company? or switch to satellite? regular dvd should look good (use the component cables). the upconversion stuff is really overrated. however, HD DVD and Bluray are not overrated. and off course your video gaming will look better with the proper cables.
LCDs are better than plasmas in certain areas, especially if you like to connect stuff like computer/game systems. for 42 and below sizes LCD >>>>>>Plasma but for 50 in +, Plasma is the better deal. Plasma is better for movies because of the better black levels.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/02/panasonics-th-50pz700u-plasma-becomes-best-ever-tested/ I'd go with the Panasonic, if I had to choose Plasma over LCD. Consumer Reports: Panasonic Plasma Best Flat Screen Ever Tested Annual Electronics Issue Includes Latest Ratings of LCD and Plasma TVs, DVD Recorders, Digital Cameras, Camcorders, Laptops, Printers, and Smart Phones YONKERS, N.Y., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bigger, better, cheaper - - those three words sum up the major trends in LCD and plasma TVs this year, according to Consumer Reports Annual Electronics Issue, available on newsstands starting tomorrow. The latest round of testing turned up the best flat panel set that Consumer Reports has ever tested: the Panasonic TH- 50PZ700U plasma TV. Additionally, the Panasonic brand of flat-screen TVs has fared well in Consumer Reports Annual Product Reliability Survey. The Panasonic 50-inch TH-50PZ700U ($2,900) is one of the new breed of 1080p plasma TVs. It combines "full HD" -- 1920x1080 native resolution, the highest currently available -- with the characteristic strengths of plasma technology. In Consumer Reports tests, the Panasonic TH-50PZ700U reproduced the finest detail, rich vibrant colors and deep blacks that lent an almost three-dimensional look to images. It scored "Excellent" for HD, DVD, and standard-definition picture quality in Consumer Reports tests.
I would say read from latest posts backwards. People typically start talking about defects and problems (dithering, pixelation, etc) later in the lifespan. You probably already looked at these. But just in case... LCD reviews, settings, known problems, etc Plasma reviews, settings, known problems, etc
It should be the greatest ever considering the cost of the Pioneer Elite line of products. I do have a Pioneer Elite receiver, but I'll need to take on a 2nd and 3rd job before I can afford their TVs.
I just recently made...*channels message to tinman* "My first purchase of an HDTV everrrrr...." I got a 52" Sharp LCD. Best way-above-my-means money I've ever spent So naturally I'd be biased and recommend LCD. Though the features might be just pure generalizations and assumed differences between the two, It came down to personal particular wants that LCD met. - Less gare - Works better as a computer monitor - Less weight. Not that I can lift mine by myself though - Plasmas are more fragile. I have a friend who's plasma stopped working moving it apartment to apartment. Something about the gases in it and it wasnt covered under warranty... But no problem with plasma should stop anyone from buying them. Its generally accepted plasmas have a more "pure", organic picture than LCDs. And its seems places like sports bars have plasmas in them more than LCDs. Or, just get a projector
congrats, Sharp AQUOS are top notch. Sharp has been in the LCD game for along time. the reasoning for Sports bars to have Plasmas is that LCDs (back in the day) had issues with ghosting images because the refresh rates were so slow back then. Now its not an issue. Back then, Plasmas were better since it would be less 'blurry' on fast action. Nowaways the ghosting issue is pretty much gone on LCDs. Also for larger sizes, plasma is still cheaper than LCDs, so the sports bar would choose the cheaper. also back in the day, there was no such thing as your 52 inch LCD.
this is the tv I want to get next year. The 60 inch version. Hopefully it has come down from its $7000 price tag.
TRIGGER PULLED! I went with the 50" Plasma. At the end of the day (literally), it seemed like there was a slight chance that the off-angle viewing would be better for this plasma, and my set-up might have some 30 degree angles. Also, I'll be watching at night more often than day, so glare isn't worrying me. Thanks for your help. I feel very excited. And very poor. Gonna go heat up some Ramen.
You can pick up HDMI cables at Directron here in Houston for $8 each. I just got a couple over the weekend for my new 46 inch Sharp Aquos. http://www.directron.com/
