It's funny that everyone missed the greatest album of all time: The Joshua Tree - U2 Not sure about the other four for me but it would be at least 2 or 3 Radiohead albums (Kid A, OK Computer), some Kanye (The College Dropout, Graduation), and John Mayer (Continuum, Heavier Things).
I do like The Joshua Tree, but Achtung Baby is the best thing they've ever done. Apart from the excellent Side One on JT (Streets through Running), they have some OK songs (In God's Country, One Tree Hill), whereas every single song on Achtung Baby is highly charged and the lyrics are better than anything Bono's ever done before. But the Joshua Tree is a close #2.
1) Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? I think is pretty much Music Prerequisite standard bearer of album to listen to "if you're getting serious about music." 2) Pearl Jam - Ten: I know this is a criticized album for being too mainstream. I personally like Vs more. But to me out of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Alice in Chains of the early 90's sound, it was whoever you heard first after the sleaze rock period. 3) Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life: To me he IS the sound of the 70's R&B. Just a tad past Earth, Wind & Fire. 4) Queen - Night at the Opera: Variety of arena rock sounds. Though its mostly to hear the VOICE that exemplifies vocal rock excellence. 5) Fugees - The Score: hip hop to me is hit and miss depending on the listener. There's better albums but would you really recommend NWA or Wu Tang Clan? This album can appeal to a broad base, the mainstream listener, casual listener and purists.
Sorry to disagree, but War & The Unforgettable Fire are better albums (but not by much). So emotionally charged, and more raw than Joshua Tree. But, with that said, one of the best songs ever by U2 is on The Joshua Tree - Bullet the Blue Sky. That showcased some incredible guitar work by the Edge.
