    I was right then too.

Maybe 659 people are trolling, but I see it differently than you.

If I were doing it on an exam, I would put down 288. That doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Incorrect, and fixed. I've already proven your answer wrong mathematically in your previous post anyways, I can't believe you're arguing further. Look at this further.

    48
    -------
    2(9+3)

How you're saying the original problem is written (which it isn't) gives you 2 (which in this case it does), but to mirror the original notation of the original problem it transforms into this:

    48 1
    ----- x ----- = 48/2(1/12).
    2 (9+3)

Now, if you do this improperly (like you have been) you will get 288.

48/(1/6) or 48 * 6 = 288. But how is this possible? Those fractions clearly give you 2!

    Good night.

First of all, there is only one right answer. That's the entire point of order of operations -- to remove ambiguity. If you think there is more than one right answer, you already don't understand the problem.

Now, given that there is only one right answer, why would you put down 288 on an exam?

Never said there was more than one right answer. Some people do it wrong.

Math is the language of the universe, not English.

yes, but easier to explain in words to some who don't understand the rudimentary concepts ;)

Good, then its agreed that there is one answer and it is 288.

Are my eyes faulty or does that say 750 people chose 2? And why are there so few names listed in the public poll? Or is Clutch just fooling around with us and changing the number on the poll? Communist!

And BEAT LA, the way you work, you are effectively say:

    12*48/2 =/= 48/2*12

Which, I'm not sure if you've noticed, contradicts the laws of associativity.

If that's what you want it to be.

Don't get mad at me because I see things in a way that makes sense. Anger only turns into hate.

I'm not angry I have to do it this way in order for the answer to be accepted.

If we were in grade school, and we were all following the teacher's PEMDAS method, it'd be 288.

I think most math or science people would see it as 2. No one uses that divide symbol in the math or sciences anyways, most people would write it as:

    (48/2)*(9+3)

if they wanted to convey 288.

To people who have been trained in math and sciences, that divide symbol, or the slash '/', just seems like the line that seperates the numerator and denominator.

You guys need to find better hobbies btw.

Who hacked the poll? Jeez. Someone is smart enough to find a loop hole in the poll but they can't solve a simple math problem.

It isn't about what one person "wants". There is a convention which is in place so that everyone can look at an arithmetic expression and evaluate it the same way. There is no room for subjective interpretation here.

The people have spoken. 2 is the ultimate answer. Time to close the thread.
