Even considering disparity of force, I don't believe he would have been justified in shooting. You can't escalate the situation the way he did and then claim self defense.

You must attempt to defuse the situation by ignoring taunts and walking away if necessary. If he had done so, and then been attacked by multiple assailants, he would probably be okay to shoot his attackers, armed or not.

Although, in a crowded restaurant, it's still not a particularly good idea. His best course of action would have been to GTFO as quickly as possible.

 

Early in the video someone says "I'm here in line", if this was a dispute over a place in line its pretty ridiculous. The whole culture of "I must defend against every possible slight against me as if my whole life depends on it" is dumb.

If someone raised their voice at me over a place in line I would tell them "Go ahead and go first, it's not important."

Also I can't believe that 6 posters thought a handgun would make this somehow better. You ended up with a guy receiving a beatdown which was probably very unpleasant but didn't look like would require hospitalization.

Best case scenario with a gun, you are the ONLY one armed and you dissuade the pack until security/cops arrive and would you really trust these cell camera people to be honest witnesses.

Worst case scenario, every 3rd person is armed and you have a bloodbath.

Or you are the only one armed but you have to shoot someone...over Beef with Broccoli.

Working in the restaurant business, I've run into many a**hole African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latin-Americans, and Caucasian-Americans. Makes no difference. And tons of nice people from all races, creeds, colors, all that crap. I am very fortunate to have lived in fairly nice areas throughout my life, so I'm sure my view is a bit biased. But sometimes, individuals who are considered minorities may act defensive and a**holish because they've been dumped on- I've seen black people get followed around in stores for no reason, Latin Americans get talked to like they're 2nd graders because it's assumed they don't speak English (OK, many don't, but it's still not all), and individuals of Middle Eastern descent (including 2 good friends of mine) get s**t on at restaurants and retail stores- and without provocation.

With a few exceptions, I've had minority customers come in acting like jerks and leave acting completely nice because I joked with them and treated them like equal human beings and without contempt. I've seen co-workers do the same, but I've also seen a LOT of the other type of behavior. It's just on each person to make an extra effort to be aware of these things and try a little extra to be considerate towards those who are of a different race than us, because I do believe that there can be an instinctive bias when we see someone who has a different skin color than we do. I don't think we do it intentionally, I think it's just a reaction. Plus, sometimes we think that a person of another race is going to have an attitude against us for the same reason, so we get defensive. Many put their guard up and are afraid even before something happens.

And yes, some of us have been victimized by someone of another race, and then it's very difficult not to stereotype. It's just something that each individual has to try to do as best they can to make the world a better place. You know, like when you go out each day, if you run into someone from another race than yours, just maybe try just a slight bit extra to be nice, smile a little wider, be as considerate as you can be no matter how bad a day you're having, etc. Believe me, it can be tough to do, but it's worth it.
