I'm suprised how many people in the poll are choosing the PS3 over the 360. Maybe Sony has a chance after all.
It is a little surprising I guess, but not too much IMO. Outside of the price tag, I think the PS3 is in about as good a position as previous Playstations or even better (hardware specs, developer support, online service, etc.). I imagine most of the people who voted for it are kind of like me. From reading the thread, few people plan on getting one at launch, but plan on getting one when the price drops (it won't be $500-$600 forever). Not everyone gave a reason for doing so, but perhaps games like Gran Turismo, SOCOM, God of War (or a GOW-clone in Heavenly Sword), Final Fantasy, Ico/SOTC, MGS4, UT2007, etc., are "forcing" people to buy a PS3 at some point. Those games (or in some cases, even games similar to them) aren't available on the 360 from what I could tell. Because of this, it isn't a question of 360 or PS3 but a question of when to get a PS3. FWIW, I think Sony has a strong chance of doing better than the 360 in Europe and Japan. In Europe, I think the PS3 is priced similarly to past Playstations (not to mention they can actually get one at about the same time as American and Japanese gamers). They've also supported Sony consoles strongly before, and at this point, the 360 is starting to bomb there like it has in Japan. In Japan, it is basically just the Wii and the PS3, which are probably going after different markets. Wii might win the region, but PS3 might be able to win over anyone who wants a PS3/360 experience (HD graphics, great physics and animation, improved AI, etc.) instead of a Wii experience. Assuming the PS3 shipments are to be met and are divided evenly, the PS3 might even be able to sell more systems in Europe and Japan than the 360 the first day it goes on sell (less likely in Europe though, but might still have a chance). Technically, I think they might make a small loss or break about even at launch (can't tell until they give a price and actual specs), but yeah, they won't be losing money on HW like Sony and MS will be ($150-$200 at least it seems).
It's either a PS3 or Wii for me, $600 for a PS3 maybe a little too rich for my blood though. I was greatly disappointed with Gamecube, but $250 is cheap enough to give Nintendo another shot. The ability to download all past nintendo games + turbo grafix 16 games is a huge plus as well.
Lets just say I have a very good source that says they will not lose any money on the console unless there is some major changes in terms of selling price between now and November.
i own a 360 and i love it. i feel it has the best of both worlds when it comes to graphics and affordability. It may be 400 but ill be darned if i shell out 600 for a system that looks exactly the same. I look forward to checking out the Wii but will by no means buy it at launch. The innovative system is intriguing but i still have my reservations. The online features with the 360 are simply incredible and i still dont know anyone who owns a 360 and is disappointed. (this is my first post here ever...please be gentle )
Well, I don't know the exact specs, the cost to implement the motion sensing technology, or the asking price they are considering. I'm just going off of previous statement they've made, like this one: http://wii.ign.com/articles/711/711607p1.html Granted, that doesn't have to be true, but I guess I'm just hoping the either have technology advanced enough to warrant the price (or close enough) or that they will reduce the price to fit the technology they are putting into the Wii (I remember wanting a $99 Wii back when I read it was supposed to be just a souped-up GC). It definitely wouldn't be a bad idea to make profit on each one though. There seems to be a lot of demand for the Wii, so they might as well ask for more money than they may have originally planned. I wonder if maybe Nintendo will make the Wii the first Nintendo console to launch at >$199 (AFAIK, I think all other systems were launched at that price).
Why pay $600 when you could get it for $500? Also, it may just be because I look at this stuff all the time, but I can see at least a small difference in some PS3 games compared to 360 games, although mostly in the area of physics, animation, framerate, etc., and not so much the graphics themselves. For example, something like MotorStorm might be about on par with PGR3, but MotorStorm has more cars in races (I think), more destructibility, better physics, and tracks that are more open. Not really a great comparison, but that's all we got at this point. I think if you look at the 5 best PS3 games and the 5 best 360 games, there appears to be at least a small difference between them. Of course, at this point, that's probably more a tribute to the developers working on PS3 games than the power of the PS3. Put Kojima, Square-Enix, Naughty Dog, Factor 5, etc., on the 360 and you'll get some games that probably look better than most other next-gen games. In the end, the difference probably isn't worth $100-$200 by itself, but I don't think they look exactly the same either.
I don't have a preference right now for the next generation. I know I'm going to wait at least a year before I lay down some cash for one. Maybe longer. I know I'll be into Madden(so that means 360 or PS3 most likely), and I'll just have to see what console specific games strike my fancy. Right now I'm content with the games I have(some of which I have yet to touch). And I'm looking forward to some upcoming PS2 games(as well as the new zelda). Recently I've been playing more out of my GC, so I'm not as sour on N as I have been.
Sony has banked on the brand recognition and the simple influence of the Playstation name, and it has worked. Many people tend to buy stuff on only the most general of facts. The PS1 and PS2 were solid machines, and that momentum will carry over for the 'casual' crowd.
If the Wii playability is even close to what it is being pimped as, hell yes. And I'll get PS3 for the mass market games, since I'm already used to the controller style. That and I have a little more faith in a PS over an XBOX in terms of not breaking down over a few years. That and the secondary market for used games on the PS3 will be much better.
I'm getting the XBOX360 in a month or so, about one month before NBA2K7 comes out for it. I'm also looking forward to Halo 3 of course, Splinter Cell Double Agent, FIFA07, Forza Motorsport 2, etc etc. My friend brought his XBOX360 and hooked it up on my 30 inch Sony CRT HDTV. He brought Oblivion and Ghost Recon: AW. I WAS IN SHOCK. We even compared both Halo 2's with component cables on both systems. I saw a huge...HUGE difference. So yeah... XBOX360 for me. I wouldn't mind copping a PS3 for Metal Gear, GT, and Tekken.
Imagine what we might be seeing in another 4-5 years once developers start maxing out these systems. Namco better make sure that the next time they show Tekken, it better look next-gen. In fact, both DOA and Tekken look like crap right now...which is kind of weird since they're fighting games (probably the best ones when it comes to graphics), usually with just 2 people on the screen. At least Virtua Fighter 5 looks decent enough. I think I read that Namco is still learning the PS3 hardware, so hopefully that Tekken demo at E3 was as much a representation of Tekken PS3 as GTHD was of GT5 on the PS3.
Own XBox 360 and was thinking about getting a PS3 at some point, but I said the same about the PS2. Oblivion has been inside my 360 for at least two months and I might not take it out till Halo 3.
Given the age range of the board members, I guess I'm not suprised to see the Wii come in first so far (old-schooler's vote) and the PS3 come in second. I know that the younger crowd below 21 is all about the 360, and you don't see too many folks that age here on CF.net. Personally, I will buy a Wii for the fun of it; Nintendo has a solid record when it comes to flat-out fun games. I will also buy the 360 when it comes down in price and is modable. PS3 is waaayyyy out of my price range given the amount of gaming I do (very little). I could see buying it at the end of it's lifespan when it's deeply discounted and I can get the games for under $10. Of course, that could change if it is moddable to the extent of the current XBox.
The PS3 might be able to do some of the same things a modded Xbox could do, although without actually being modded. You theoretically could switch out the HDD to any 2.5" SATA HDD you have, you should be able to use user-created programs in the Linux OS (homebrew), I think you can use it as a server (at least a dedicated one for some games if it is supported), and probably a couple of other things. I sometimes forget what a modded Xbox can do, so not sure what to think about when it comes to what the PS3 should be able to do. Of course, if you meant pirating games or something like that, then I don't see anything to suggest the PS3 as being "moddable to the extent of the current Xbox."
RC, whats up with the rumors on the net about MS releasing a new xbox360 with HDMI outs? What do you think?
With the DS kicking butt and people falling in love again with old school titles, I think the Wii has a chance to bring Nintendo back to the forefront of gaming.
