this, but at least I have to respect BYU for not selling out their honor code for anything, even if it costs them a trip to the final four. I would never go to BYU, but I have friends who are there and I think half of them are engaged already.
Not technically accurate. While coffee & tea are on the list of avoided drinks, caffeine is a gray area. You'll see it's not mentioned in the honor code. Mormons are encouraged to avoid any substances that are "habit-forming" (of which caffeine and many other substances could qualify for), but caffeine has not been strictly prohibited by LDS authorities.
Here is a little more insight from former BYU great Michael Smith http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6175090
Someone else answered your question but yea, it is. ESPN listed all the things in the honor code and abstaining from tea and coffee was one (as well as tobacco and alcohol). I didn't see anything specific about coke or pepsi but I would have to assume they are no-nos as well. Another one is that as a student at BYU, you have to uphold the honor code at all times which means if you see a fellow student having some tea, you have to "rat them out". Crazy.
Speaking to my Mormon classmates today, high amounts of caffeine are prohibited from ingestion. Such as coffee or tea. There is some gray area such as sodas and some herbal teas which have lower amounts of caffeine, but the premise of the rule is to not become addicted to a substance. They said Cokes and herbal teas fall in a gray area but are generally accepted as long as they don't become habit.
BYU has a hyper-strict honor code with serious ramifications if breached. They are well known for this. He knew the deal when he signed on.
Maybe he wasn't "white and delightsome" enough. (LDS theology fun facts: dark-skinned people are that way 'cause they bear the stain of Cain/sided with Satan; blacks/Native Americans become literally, physically whiter when they get closer to God.) Jewish people driving German cars.
Right after selection sunday the team playing BYU should hire an investigator to monitor whether Jimmer is following the honor code. BYU couldn't wait a month?
Hardly surprising. In America folks worship the fetus, but punish anyone who creates one outside some pre-determined path. And once the baby is born, everyone loses interest.
Oh wow. this won't help their recruiting going forward. Anyone else remember how they kicked out a female student some 12-15 years ago after seeing her on The Real World?
