Shumer is hanging them with their own rope.

The whole insurrection could not appear more ridiculous in retrospect, numb nuts and goobers, deadbeats non-voters shamans that is who Donald Trump Will forever be remembered for.

That's not the House managers fault. They are the prosecutors but as you acknowledge there is a lot they don't control about the process. It seems odd to blame them for a weak case when you acknowledge the problems with the timelines and control they were facing.

All that said they presented a pretty thorough case and the evidence was overwhelming coming in. As stated before it was going to be a very high bar when several Republicans were saying under no circumstance would they vote for conviction and 45 of them even voted to not hear the case. Getting 57 Senators to vote for conviction was an achievement. Unfortunately not enough to overcome the partisanship that saved Trump yet again.

McConnell is blasting Trump even though he voted not guilty. My guess is his weasly answer is that the doesn't think the Senate was the right forum.

This is not anywhere near the end of Trump's troubles as even Trump's own lawyers pointed out a former President is subject to criminal and civil law. Impeachment isn't a substitute for criminal or civil penalties and just because Trump was impeached but not convicted in the Senate doesn't stop him from facing criminal prosecution or lawsuits. We know that NY is still continuing it's investigations into Trump and GA is now looking into it. Hopefully the DC now will look into Trump's role in Jan. 6.

What did I miss? Did they decide not to bring witnesses and just go ahead and vote?

If McConnell really means this he should give a friend of the court brief if Trump is brought up on criminal charges.

it's over. A deal was cut to introduce Rep. Beutler's statement into the record rather than depose her.

So can Trump be criminally charged for acts committed as president because he can't be impeached because he's not president now?

The Republican Party is now no better than a bunch of Russian, North Korean, of Communist party power over justice and democracy regimes.

My guess is Mitch McConnell and some Republican cowards in the Senate that voted not guilty were worried about alienating their voting base, many of whom likely voted for Trump in November. Others, like Cruz and Hawley, supported the insurrection, so we knew there was no way they were voting not guilty.

The requirement to convict a president of impeachment needs to be changed, or we need to change who gets to vote for conviction. With the current method, it will be next to impossible to convict any president.
