I agree, he deserves a fair amount of the blame, perhaps more since he did know his own background, but certainly not all of it. You say you doubt the women were forcing him to have intercourse but isn't the reserve just likely as true? I think women should be just as, or even more adamant about men they're sleeping with wearing condoms because you know what, they're the ones that usually end up going through the worst when a pregnancy happens.
uhh, yeah...just because their father is a low life idiot doesn't mean that they can't grow up to be intelligent successful people. Sure, they're starting at a disadvantage but they could overcome that.
maybe, but the odds are against them socioeconomically... and out of 20, the odds are even worse that all of them will be successful. being an ex-gambling man, i believe the law of averages is indisputable. so i guess that begs the question, how do you feel about two or three of his kids being successful while the others suffer?
"Suffer" is a bit melodramatic; they'll just be poor, not in eternal pain. But, it's no different from the rest of life where some people are successul and happy and others can't seem to catch a break. Even within families, it's not uncommon to have one sibling have success in life and the other sibling not able to get it together. At least if a couple of them are succesful, they could potentially help ease the burden of others.

Right. He knows all their names and birthdays. And thats the acceptable level of fatherhood... not just for himself but for these women. All the other women are probably equally hopeless. I DO know the type. They somehow like the position of being able to finger point all the man's flaw cuz it somehow puts them in a position of superiority... And having a kid gives them some company and purpose, even without a plan. And they're used to seeing babies grow up in that kind of environment. And they like the whole "Lend me a couple dollars" thing. So the women get something ut of it, even if that something is very very very little...better than their usual absolute nothing. And the kids get...the kind of life they're parents are used to.
