25 year old man murdered in Georgia for jogging while black

Ahmaud Arbery, a 25 y-o man with a criminal history supposedly only ‘jogging’ 12 miles from his home was spotted trespassing on a home under construction by Gregory McMichael (the retired police officer), his son Travis, and William Bryan, a neighbour of theirs. He was recorded on home security footage doing this. For further context, this same property had $2,500 worth of fishing equipment stolen just recently. Travis McMichael also recently had his 9mm pistol stolen from his pickup truck parked outside his home on January 1st. Arbery was also supposedly seen looking through the windows of houses by several people. So, from the get-go, the neighbourhood was on high alert.

Under the reasonable suspicion that Arbery is a burglar, Gregory calls 911, drives up to Arbery, confronts him and asks him to stop, wait for police, and talk, to which Arbery takes off running. Gregory, Travis and William then continue to follow him and stop up the road, leading to the confrontation. As we can see in the video recorded by William, Arbery then runs up to Gregory and Travis, who were unmoving and parked in the middle of the road, runs around their truck and attacks Gregory, to which he obviously responds in self-defense, shooting and killing Arbery.

The really frightening thing is that they felt empowered to do this, I am not saying they were out to kill him but they thought they had a right to detain a guy who just happened to be out jogging and black.

It makes me think that there are certain people who have been waiting to have their own Trayvon moment, the fact that he tried to avoid them twice should do away with any self defense claims.

Does every case have to go to a grand jury?

It seems that the DA is hoping to place the blame for not prosecuting on the grand jury.

 

Yeah, I was going to wait until people calmed down to ask whether:

1) Arbery lived in the area. The answer apparently is no. No one "jogs" 12 miles from their house unless they are a marathoner, which he's not.
2) Whether he was the burglary suspect - sounds like possibly a 'yes' if he was seen on camera FOUR TIMES at a house under construction 12 miles from where he lives.

It's starting to look like the McMichaels were acting in good faith to protect the community.

 

It is illegal to detain a citizen if you didn't actually physically see them commit the felony in front of them. So your entire framing of the man is pointless. Those hicks never saw him do anything. They just saw a black man jogging and cornered him while armed and presenting those weapons. Anyone would be scared shitless.

 

Apparently you don't run often. A lot of joggers often drive to spots that have suitable trails or nicer trails to run where it's more pedestrian friendly.

 

Of course. And I'm sure he was just taking a water break at the house under construction - running makes you very thirsty.

 

A lot of people act in good faith and do evil things. Hitler might have acted in good faith to exterminate the Jews because he probably genuinely believed it would improve society.

Two reported burglaries happened in a course of a year and that is these asshats' justification to run down the first black man they see jogging and confront him with weapons presented. I'm sure in their mind they thought they were saving the community.

The case was initially reccomended that no arrests be made and this is the justification.

Waycross District Attorney George Barnhill wrote a memo about the case before recusing himself in April 2020.[10][22] The recusal came after Arbery's mother argued that Barnhill had a conflict of interest because Barnhill's son, like Gregory McMichael previously, worked for the Brunswick district attorney.[10] Barnhill wrote that the McMichaels were within their rights to chase "a burglary suspect".[10] Barnhill claimed that "Arbery initiated the fight", and that Travis McMichael "was allowed to use deadly force to protect himself" when "Arbery grabbed the shotgun".[20][10] Barnhill wrote that Arbery had mental health issues and past prior convictions, which "help explain his apparent aggressive nature and his possible thought pattern to attack an armed man."[10] Barnhill argued that Arbery might have caused the shotgun to fire by struggling over it,[22] and he recommended that no arrests be made.[22] Gregory McMichael told The Daily Beast that Barnhill's memo is the "closest version of the truth".[11]

In another document, Barnhill wrote that there was a video of Arbery "burglarizing a home immediately preceding the chase and confrontation".[22]

It's terrifying that people who have this kind of power can pretty much bury stuff like this and think its ok.

This reads like something out of the 60's instead of 2020.

I would like comments to see if this is correct, They never saw him committing a crime so how can he include this as a reason it was justified?
