It's always fun to go back (baseball-reference is the easiest, they have MLB WAR and stats right there next to the pick) and look at prior drafts and see how things went. Sometimes it's "how the hell did nobody take that guy earlier?" or it's "what the hell was everyone thinking about him?"
Round 3, Pick 93: Keon Johnson, SS, First Presbyterian Day School, Macon, Georgia First high schooler of the class. Georgia high school player of the year during his junior year, Vanderbilt commit. Good swing decisions, makes a lot of contact. Questions about whether he can stick at shortstop, but his polish could keep him there.
Anyone have an honest opinion on the Astros draft so far? I just don’t know enough of these players to have an educated opinion either way.
My completely unprofessional opinion is that this draft has been… meh. The Astros had more slot money than they’ve had in over a decade. They have played it safe with the first three picks, taking college players. They just took a high schooler, whose scouting report doesn’t read as too promising. But im not a scout or have any kind of background scouting, so what do I know.
I don’t think so, he doesn’t have Matthews power/speed potential but is more likely to stick at SS. Johnson makes a lot more contact too.
Based on pre-draft rankings across various outlets, it’s been an underwhelming draft. Houston got 3 high floor college guys that projected as 2nd rd talents and a HS kid who had a 4th rd grade, so they have overdrafted vs the industry. There are still a couple of 2nd rd talents left on the board, so it’s possible Houston adds one of them later and that will add optimism to this draft. But so far I’m disappointed; there really doesn’t seem to be any dynamic players in this class so far. Also, I don’t know ****.
Ask me in two years, after these prospects have played in AA hopefully. And I will only be 50% sure since they still have two huge development steps to get to The Show.
