Nah. There is lots of gossip and speculation in the 12-24 hours before the draft. It’s possible the Astros were “wrong” and no one was going to take him before #28 - but Astros thought it was real enough to take him higher.
I think Horn is a better prospect than Hughes. Astros were rumored to be interested in both Brick and Horn leading up to the draft. Aiden Robbins is also still available.
Gossip and speculation has to originate somewhere...and I seriously doubt it's teams talking to each other about who they like and where they may draft them.
They think the kid from ND has untapped upside with his frame and delivery. They think he can get into the mid to high 90’s.
Scouts talk to each other a lot and some guys move up at the last minute. I remember a pitcher named Jay did that a handful of years ago. All it really tells me is that the Astros really wanted the kid if they took him as high as they did.
I strongly suspect that if the Astros drafted him at 17 that they contacted his agent with their offer … “Will your client accept 1.25 slot money if we draft him at 1.17?” Agents must collect a handful of offers before the draft starts.
Who cares. The vast majority of first rounders don’t do **** in the MLB, especially once you get past the first few picks in each draft. People worry way too much about this stuff. There’s no point in risking it if they are confident in Hughes’ bat.
And maybe even next year . Brown is aggressive, he called up Jake bloss quickly . Maybe as trade bait, but still moved him quickly . Pecko is moving with speed through the system Many of danas recent high pitcher picks have gotten injured so we don't have great data on how he moves them. But , these college guys can start at high A or A if they pitch at all and then be in AA by next may/June depending on how they look of course . At that point you are just a beat away from a call up . There's also incentives now to get guys called up . I would say these are the most advanced pitchers Dana has drafted . He's gonna be aggressive with em
I know that happens while they're actually scouting guys...but in the leadup to the draft anyone saying s**t to anybody should be fired.
Parades and Tucker cant be a wash. The value stops it from being. Yes stats wise. Tucker is getting paid 60 million a year. Paredes is getting paid 10. For the same offensive production. Im not 100% sold on Cam. Ive seen the flashes tho. So I know its in there. I dont see how this could be classified as a bad trade.
FWIW Fangraphs had Hughes rated higher in the early 20s and had Radell in the 30s, so vs Pipeline they don’t seem as overdrafted. But Fangraphs has Mendes rated pretty low, outside the top 75.
We don’t. This is all bullshit but it’s fun to act like it matters and pretend we have a clue. Metaphor for life.
