I sincerely hope you're right. Though, I fear it may be too late to stop or roll back the progress they've made towards an authoritarian state. We've had Louisiana stop ongoing primary voting to rig an election. They're going to throw out votes. The midterms will have to be a complete blowout for Dems to counter the dip$hittery.
a lot of them are active saboteurs and basically in league with the enemy many of them will gladly sit idly by as the country gets destroyed thinking tweets and reddit posts or protesting in a dinosaur suit actually does something republicans aren’t messing around, and these MFers still think this is a game Trump is having the DOJ go after Democrats left and right and here we have one granting Tina Peters clemency this is why MAGA is here and has yet to go away
people are sick of this sh*t if you’re not willing to fight and do whatever it takes at this point in time, then fck off and go away Jared Polis shouldn’t have a single day of peace
Let's be real. If that was a black election denier locked up there's no way in hell he gives them a pardon. I'm literally sick to my stomach Were telling the criminals that they were right and empower them to do it again. ****ing weasels
Well, the VA legislature CAN "throw them all out" with a mandatory retirement age scheme. But ok, terminologies again. We might be talking about different things. Co-equal implies same level of power to impact each other. They don't have the same kind of power. The legislature was designed to have more structural power. Under the US Constitution, they can create, form, and modify the courts, including the SCOTUS. The Court has no equivalent power back. Independent implies isolated, not impacted by each other. Clearly not the case. Their powers affect each other all the time. So, there is an asymmetry here. The legislature has power over the structure and composition of the courts, while the courts operate within that structure. Caveat - I'm talking about the federal government and US Constitution, not state. But I suspect VA is similar, if anything even more tilted that way.
Go look at recent history in states like North Carolina and Florida or heck, just look at the massive corruption of our Supreme Court. This would be small potatoes compared to what Republicans have done and if the situation in Virginia were reversed, you know Republicans would do it. I know my fire analogies get tiresome, but sometimes you need to light a fire to stop a bigger fire. As Barry Goldwater said (I can't believe I'm quoting this, but here we are): "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!"
Polis was in a tough spot. Trump was threatening the National Center for Atmospheric Research (the premier climate research facility in the US) and with drought here now (intrastate Colorado River litigation and help for farmers being just two issue) and with fires coming, it was clear no federal disaster aid was going to get approved for Colorado. His Sophie's Choice was to either do this or see a bunch of his constituents suffer because of Trump's pettiness. He delayed it as long as he could, but for most politicians in his place, the outcome was predictable. Still, he gave in too easily on the rhetoric and reasoning, refused to make the case for fear of it angering Trump more, and of course, there will be a vast majority of the Democratic Party thinking he just surrendered for no reason. I think he should have stood up and said no, then repeatedly explained what that meant to Colorado. Still, if people die or go hungry because of disasters in the state, it's not something I will be directly forced to live with--but he will. The real crime is that he was blackmailed into this decision by Trump, who was holding Coloradoans hostage. Edit: And of course, there is tremendous uncertainty on whether Trump will act in the best interest even now.
What a cowardly argument. "Polis was in a tough position bcz the mob boss was threatening funding if he didn't pardon a convicted felon who tried underming the rule of law." I'm sure giving Trump what he wants will totally not embolden him more to do the same **** to another governor. Jesus what a awful argument.
The US has an unofficial "no ransom" policy. The US gov officially does not pay ransom to terrorists to release hostages. In reality, they do pay the ransom. Democratic governors are facing the same issue now, except it's the POTUS doing the hostage-taking. The POTUS is holding the citizens of Democratic states hostage unless the states give him what he wants. In any normal time, he would be booted out in an instant, but MAGA is a disease and we are in an extremely abnormal time. Yet, what are you going to do? Let your citizens suffer over a "small" ask? You are not able to put yourself in the shoes of people who actually care about their citizens and have to make tough decisions. MAGA supporters who support this are horrible, horrible people.
Yeah just give the bully your lunch money the first few times and I'm sure he'll eventually leave you alone. WTF kind of logic is this where you're basically defending the aggressor? You might as well just head on out with @JuanValdez and never look back. I had someone try and take my shoes off my feet one time, ran in the store hit the piece of feces with a Thunderbird bottle (kid in 90s) and never had a problem again. Cause everyone knows you won't just lie the **** down, you attempt to steal from me I'll try to end you. Democrats and their voters need to find their nuts or get ready to lay on their backs for the next decade or so. The 2nd amendment is there to reinforce the first and I sleep with firearm always in close vicinity.
I've lost damn near all respect for him after that white flag waiving. The intellectuals won't save us, maybe he didn't get the memo. The universe itself is a violent place without it we wouldn't exist. I'm not advocating for it just making a factual statement for the fridge IQ leve MAGA out there.
This thread really made me realize how right @Reeko was with his argument which I never understood until now. These "democrats" are completely out of touch with reality and have no Idea how to confront fascism. Meanwhile this was the reaction of the second most powerful official in the doj. They ridicule and laugh at these weak democrats and look at them as losers.
What irks me the most is the sheer delusion that if somehow we capitulate to Trumps demands then he'll suddenly approve aid and be your friend. Im sincerely at a loss for words at how delusional and out of touch so many people are 16 months into the admin. Look at Newsome, Houchel and Mikie Sherrill who sued the admin and won in court which led to un freezing of aid. @rimrocker to say, "but for most politicians in his place, the outcome was predictable" when other governors have sued and won in court shows how wrong he is. The only way to confront a bully is by showing strength.
no he wasn’t you don’t make deals with devils if he wants to withhold funds, then take him to court What’s to stop Trump from now threatening him a 2nd or a 3rd time? He’s already proven he’s a weak b*tch there’s always an excuse or some sort of rationale for why Democrats are p*ssies if y’all don’t want to seriously fight against what’s happening in this country, just officially declare so now and we can all stop wasting our time Dems are the type to think allowing their bully to punch them in the face and stuff them in a locker every day before 1st period is ok and they shouldn’t fight back because they might get in trouble with the teacher
Democrats are p*ssies, and have conditioned their base to think it’s ok You think a republican would ever grant clemency to a Democrat because Joe Biden or Gavin Newsome “threatened” them? Hell no league said you can now travel and goaltend, and Dems refuse to do so because it’s against norms and goes against the spirit of the game…meanwhile republicans are traveling and goaltending all over the place and running up the score republicans are so emboldened to do whatever they want because they know they’re going against a b*tchmade party…whenever a Dem finally says “enough is enough” and returns that same energy republicans start crying and clutching their pearls because they’re not actually tough, they just so happen to be going against even bigger weaklings
I'm not sure I got pulled into that conversation. I think Polis was wrong to grant any clemency. With Coloradans being held hostage, I think the governor's response should be to hold firm and if citizens suffer, make sure they know that it is Trump that makes them suffer. As much as I respect rimrocker, on this one we are on opposite ends.
