Money will burn fast if we go thru free agency and trade for big dollar targets like Chris Jones, only. Only so many fingers to plug up all the holes. I'm going: First Pick: best of if available: S- Kichens CB- Quinyon Mitchell WR- Brian Thomas WR- Troy Franklin Second Pick: Best of if Available: DT- Darius Robinson WR- Ladd McConkey DT- Jordan Burch (may be going back to school) CB- Chau Smith-Wade DT- Brandon Dorius 3rd Pick: Best of if Available: DT- T'Vondre Sweat WR- Roman Wilson RB- Blake Forum TE- Johnny Wilson WR- Tez Walker RB- Bucky Irving 4th and 5th picks (both in 4th round) Whichever I'm lacking from my pool of CB, DT, and 2 WR's, i said in the first four picks. Quinyon Mitchell in my opinion is better right now than Nelson. Nelson was seen as poor by many Texans fans last season; but I felt he did ok. Nelson is rated like the 2nd best CB in free agency. Go chance he won't take a hometown discount. If he does we can't run Nelson at slot corner. Desmond King probably won't be back....Pitre is rumored to possibly being moved to slot corner spot. Stroud only has two viable wide receivers at the moment. Nico Collins and Tank. Noah Brown probably gets more money elsewhere and leaves. Metchie probably never recovers, much like Quissenberry. Hutchinson probably will remain 3rd string at best. Robert Woods averaged about 36 yards receiving per game. No separation. **sorry I'm bring Stroud two cheap rookie contract help right now. Offensive Line should remain much the same but get healthy. Tunsell - Kenyon Green - Scruggs/Deiter (re-sign) - Shaq - Tytus Howard Problem at running back. Singletary needs to be re-signed or go get one. Pierce is a one cut back.....then he is north and south. Apparently we need shifty backs like Singletary that can cut once and then again....and again. Bucky Irving type. Josh Jacobs can but probably both Josh Jacobs and S Barkley are probably out of our price range. ---------- My solution to: Perryman: sign Patrick Queen to plug up holes Perryman didn't. Nelson: draft early a CB like Quinyon Mitchell Shultz: Brevin Jordan developing, Quitoriano get healthy....?sign Fant? or Shultz gives us hometown discount. ?Johnny Wilson? Greenard: his equal in free agency would/will cost a lot. Pay him...rookie won't replace his production. Cashman: same as Greenard. Re-sign. O-Line: re-sign Deiter.....everybody else get healthy. Devoted too much money and draft picks towards this area over the years already. Receiving Corps: draft two in the first 4 rounds. One of McConkey or Roman Wilson possession receivers to catch everything ten yards and in as a Safety Valve for Stroud. Much like Amendola, Wes Welker type. Texans run a variation of West Coast offense which is similar to the Erhardt-Perkins offense run by Brady and the Patriots. McConkey or Roman Wilson catching everything underneath, a Tez Walker taking the top off the defense like Randy Moss, and Nico, Tank, Shultz, B Jordan catching anything and everything mid field, crossing. Sometimes the best defenses is an awesome offense. Get by with duct tape and chewing gum this year.....shore it up next year.
Thomas/Mitchell and Newton are my favorite 3 players at 1-23. This means it's unlikely any of them will be available at 1-23.
Others realize they scored 3 points on offense in a playoff game and would like to see weapons added so the team has a chance to win against the better teams in the league. With this said if Mitchell is there at 1-23 I would pick him in a heartbeat.
Agreed about Mitchell However I do hope they get Stroud some weapons to work with in the rest of the draft. Obviously he needed them badly in the Ravens playoff game. Good thing is there will be many great weapons available outside the 1st rd to help Stroud out.
People seem to forget Stroud WILL HAVE TANK back without committing resources better used elsewhere. His biggest loss will be Schultz. Metche may take another step back to form. At this time DT is the top priority and Demeco has indicated the D begins with a great DL. I suppose there will be fewer surprises for Nick than there are for us when we play GM at the 23rd pick. BPA with need being a tie-breaker, not the driver of the draft. In this draft, it means you probably get new weapons for CJ. That said, there are several CBs (Arnold, Mitchell, Wiggins, DeJean and McKinstry) who could fall to us if the draft goes heavy on QBs and OTs. The panic when a group starts getting picked early just leaves some surprises.
Scoring 3 points on offense because of a lack of weapons is why they lost that game. I think they go either DT or Edge. But I would hope that if a talented guy like Thomas is available he would be the pick. I would like to see an offense that had WR Thomas RB Allen TE Johnson I guarantee you with these guys for Stroud to work with along with Collins/Dell/ Re-sign Schultz this team would score far more than 3 points in a playoff game.
I agree. Browns were the #1 ranked defense and the Texans scored well against them.....but on further investigation we see the defense scored some points on pick 6's. So the offense might not be so good.....and the defense may not be so bad. Texans failed to stop Lamar Jackson running in the following game. Set up their other running backs. A good corner helps in a way that we don't have to play Tampa-2 (Cover-2) so often. Safeties can support the run much better. -------------- Receiving corps of teams are 6 deep. I only have faith in two (Nico and Tank). I feel Noah Brown will be too expensive to production. Metchie and Hutchinson are are break glass in case of emergency 3rd stringers. ------------- Two areas I would address in free agency would middle LB. 1) Patrick Queen is a friend of Stingly and would transform our defense tremendously. Him next to Christian Anderson who will develop further this year works for me. Queen would be a significant improvement over Perryman. 2) address running back. Drafting one is risky. Josh Jacobs might be the most expensive back; but that's what having the most money entitles you to do. Go get the best option at a player of need. Jacobs can both run and catch the ball out of the backfield. Seen enough blitzes to not get his QB killed by help blocking. Rookie probably misses a lot of that in year one. -------- So I'm basically of the opinion of paying for two free agents in the form of 1) Queen 2) Jacobs maybe a 3rd) Noah Fant (TE). Then going after some of our own. Greenard, Deiter, Cashman, Fairbairn,, (? Shultz...hometown discount?). Pitre is rumored to move to slot corner or replacing Nelson. So I can see a safeties being drafted in the form of Kinchens. Replacing Pitre and we probably move on from Desmond King. I can see us drafting Theo Jones (TE Penn State) in the 4th round. Moving on from Shultz. Cheaper that way.
I’m all for spending heavy on DLine, drafting a DB in the first and a receiver like Legette in the 2nd and best LB in the 3rd. But if Nico or Tank goes down, there is a massive drop off. So I want to get Barkley/Schultz as well. There is a way to do it with our money and it gives us weapons and an elite DLine.
I'd like to add as well. It's just a position of strength at the moment. Niko, Tank, Metche and Grandpa Woods are a better base than other positions. We only lost Noah and who knows whether he'll get an offer better to leave than to come back? I'd love to see Mike Evans here, but I just don't think athletes are geared to home town discounts anymore.
We need difference makers at DT and DE from FA. 1st on CB. Shultz should be re-signed. BPA at positions of need the rest of the draft. Re-sign singletary. More 1 year prove it contracts. We have more needs than we can fill in one season. Make our defense elite. Stroud produced over 4000 yds while missing 2 games and without dell for 10 games. In summary: FA elite DT, greenard level DE, Cashman, Schultz, Fairborn, swing OT, singletary. Draft: 1st CB, 2nd on best available wr, lb, safety, OT
I’m 99.99% in agreement with this. Even down to the draft choices. Only thing I would change is getting Saquon over Singletary.. or maybe Ekeler? Someone above Singletary’s level but not necessarily Josh or Saquon. If that means Barnett instead of Greenard, I’m good with that because the FA DT we will bring in is going to be elite.

I am starting to like Thomas more and more, I’ve been going off expected 40 times but I can’t wait til combine to see how they change, but he looks much faster than the 4.47 projected (I’m looking for 4.3 area) Only reason I had Legette is he could be had in 2nd and best DB available in the 1st. I feel like the drop off from first round DB to 2nd round DB is bigger than 1st round WR to 2nd (but I could be wrong). if we can find another DB somewhere to replace Nelson, then I am very on board with a Thomas in the first.
I just want a guy at 1-23 that I think can be a star level player. I think Mitchell, Thomas and Newton are these guys. The next tier of possible star level players are The Robinsons, DeJohn, who I think can be a very good CB or a star level S. Nubin is my guy as a star level S prospect.
@jch1911 I wouldn't penalize Fant for Seahawks time - stats. Not sure who was QB....but Stroud would utilize Noah Fant well. As this video notes: Shultz was graded as 64.4 pass block grade to Fant 72.1 pass block grade (PFF) Shultz vs Fant (the cheaper would be Fant) Thank you for the compliment on energy. Tip of the cap to you.
