There's a definite tier to inductees. There are those that you cannot fail to mention in a history of music, the innovators and originals. Then there are the acts with some lasting popularity. Of the former, think Buddy Holly, Al Green, and The Beatles. Of the latter, think Cher, The Cars, and Def Leppard.
i would love to hear ians acceptance speech. it should be called the "music hall of fame" as its inductees go far beyond "rock and/or roll". i do want to go at some point...even my friends who are most cynical about stuff like this have been impressed when they visited.
Someone mentioned Cleveland earlier in a negative light. I was there for a job 4 years ago and I totally didn't think about the Hall of Fame, but I was only there a couple of weeks. That being said, it's a beautiful city. I had never seen a great lake, I was in awe. As I'm sure you know, downtown is on the lake and it's a spectacular set up. I understand it's a rust belt city but that's from the eighties, nothing rusty about it now.
Cities like Detroit and Cleveland for some reason get a bad rap for outsiders… but are pretty awesome in the spring/summer months. Then winter hits, and you realize why populations no longer grow up there compared to Texas and Arizona….
Styx doesn’t want in … at least while Dennis DeYoung is still breathing. That’s some deep hate to not want to spend one day being civil between all of the original members.
I hope A Tribe Called Quest, and maybe Kool and the Gang get in. I see MC 5 is up for some award or something. That's cool.
Agree. I some of these people/groups deserve to be recognized and I can see how they wan to broaden their followers/ticket sales from the dying out white 60+ year olds but they need to update the name because they aren't Rock and Roll. How about just Music Hall of Fame?
This a great post because I totally agree. But seriously, I think with music you can separate great acts by innovators vs just quality The Beatles are probably the best of the no doubters on your list. The non no doubters just have to bide their time. Cher has extra juice being an all time sex symbol and her overall legacy. For us hip hop R&B guys, Mary J really was one of the first if not the first to infuse hip hop attitude with R&B. In all honesty she's changed R&B as all R&B acts are hip hop infused
And that's the thing. I've heard the same from most of my music friends/family. The actual place is amazing for any music fan. All the talk about who should be in and who shouldn't is frankly kind of boring.
