Great race, that's about as good as you can ask for outside a WR. It was a National record there also I believe. Yep, she graduated from Harvard, has won Olympic gold medals and also modeled. That is maximizing your human potential, special talent.
I always forget some of the major events start their opening rounds before the Olympics officially get underway.
I wanna seem one of these swimmers come out of that river with a Babe Ruth hanging from his/her forehead.
That was a hell of a run. I don't know what gear she had to put it in at the end of the race, but that was just silly how she reeled in some great runners. I think that gives Gabby the 2 fastest times in the 200m this year. She ran slightly faster at the US Trials about a month ago.
The race Gabby was in isn't part of the Olympics - it's the London Diamond League. In the Olympics, the women's 200m won't start until the first week of August.
I’ve seen some analysis of 10m splits on the 100m, and I assume same applies to 200m … maybe. Everyone gets slower at the end. The best stay top speed longer. Carl Lewis was notorious for maintaining top speed the longest. So, no such thing as “another gear” at the end. What they say happens is chaos sets in. Your body isn’t getting tired, but it can’t sustained peak form for long, before hitches happen and strides slightly break. If that’s still true for 200m, Gabby is likely maintaining top speed, perfect form longer, while others slow down … vs actually going into a “higher gear.”
That's actually a good point. Depends on the races and runners you look at. In a lot of Bolt's races, he was jogging backwards waving at the cameras by the end of a 200m. Noah Lyles has done the same. I've seen Noah Lyles' 10m splits in the 2nd half of a 100m race be fairly consistent - where he runs something like .83's to .85's from what I recall in the final few 10m intervals. Of course the first parts of a 200m race you have to factor in the start and the curve or ignore it altogether which is why the fastest times in the 200m have you looking at splits with 9.1's for 100m. You also need to have close races, otherwise you'll always see the leaders probably slow down in the final few meters. In the DIamond League run with Gabby, I just watched it again, and you may be right. It looked like Gabby kept her form until the end, though she looked like she was showing some strain, but you can see Asher-Smith kind of give up hope in the final 15 or so meters as she was getting passed. Julien Alfred seemed to keep form until the end, but I can't tell if she slowed down appreciably. I still wonder if Gabby didn't realize Asher-Smith would go hardcore from the beginning of that race and build that lead like she did and had to accelerate or push harder after the middle of the race to catch her and Alfred in time. In comparison, if you watch Gabby's fastest time this year, which was from the Olympic Trials, she actually pulled up and slowed down with maybe 10-15m left in the race and still won easily.
I'm only following the drama at the Scamlympics. Fist up was the poop in the water. Then it's Dutch-UK relations going down via the dressage and beach volleyball. Now covid is taking out entire teams.
These open ceremonies are really goofy -- the water in that river is disgusting it looks like the San Antonio river walk after a heavy rain. I'd legit be angry if I had breathe the heavy mist from those water cannons.
