I wonder if the Astros try to find a third party to take on Montero to save some money. If the Astros are going to bring on Paredes, they mine as well take Eflin as well - he is only under contract one additional year.
Excuse me sir- Salazar has an 800 ops and I thought I was watching the reincarnation of Johnny Bench when he was up here.
Trading Montero makes a lot of sense with the Astros potentially adding another reliever and the odds that Murfee, McCullers, and Garcia will all need bullpen slots when they get healthy.
I love Caratini, but I would've rather Dana had spent the money on Lorenzen this offseason and said so at the time. Diaz and Salazar would've been fine as a duo.
I'm assuming wed have to pay most of what's left of his contract. Between him and abreu, that's a lot of dead money and probably the best money spent to rid ourselves of those 2.
IT would be hard to overstate how criminally stupid it would be for Toronto to trade Vlad Jr. this winter and not at the deadline. They are out of the running for the playoffs. If they trade him to a team that is going to be in the playoffs that team will view their getting Vlad as being worth 2 seasons (more or less) of him and presumably pay pretty close to double what they'd pay in the wintertime. That's the most bizarre tidbit I've ever heard you say. I'm not shooting the messenger as you are passing along what you've heard- but yikes- that's odd. How about Chas or Jake to Baltimore and we can take Robert off of Chicago's hands. Robert and Crochet for, Leon, Melton, Loperfido, Whitcomb, Arrighetti, Ullolo, Blubaugh and Whitley- who says no? Then- you can Trade Jake or Chas or both to the Rays/Orioles. It makes a lot of sense for the Astros to trade with both of those teams. Hope to see it happen.
In a straight salary dump Houston could probably find a team to take on 1/3 of the money left for Montero. His velo is still there so there is probably a contender who thinks they can fix him.
No 2024 draft picks are allowed to be traded or decided to be PTNLs in any deals made prior to the end of the league year.
Phillies get: OF Chas McCormick RP Rafael Montero $2M (2024) $2M (2025) Astros get: IF Aroon Escobar Only makes sense if Houston expects Tucker back next month and they plan to trade for another bat.
I'm not understanding why Houston would trade for a guy in the minors, who hasn't even shown that much promise, and probably a 50/50 shot of being slightly better than Chas in the first place.
Robert, career injury risk. Rather have Chas or Jake for now. As soon as one of them gets luke warm then trade them for higher in the off season.
The purpose of that trade would be to clear money and a couple roster spots for another trade- also paving the way to potentially re-sign Bregman or bring in another free agent.
