I just don't think they want Singleton or Dubon as the starting 1b in the post season when things get bigger and stuff gets better.

Both are good bench options though.

I like it. Maybe have to swap Gordon/Barber for Ullola/Loperfido.

They need someone to replace Verlander, for one.

For that return, and to get Montero off the books that substitution works.

Ullola has more upside than Gordon, but they are equally likely to be MLB contributors.

Dana Brown said that Whitcomb is likely to end up an outfielder in MLB. That sucks for the long-term 1b/3b situation, but it helps take the sting out of losing Loperfido who is looking more and more like a utility OF than a starter and lineup stalwart.

Asking price is very high and Diamondbacks have told teams they haven’t commuted to being sellers.

I have spent a lot of time questioning why and the only conclusions I can reach is that the Astros believe they can shift some of these players to first base or they can take someone on the roster and make them a first basemen and then fill their role with someone outside the organization.

I remember Diaz looking really bad at first.
Didn’t he have trouble catching pick off attempts?

It would seem really odd if Houston believed they had an internal solution to 1B but weren’t playing them there now.

So far when he's played 1st he hasn't looked out of place.

I dont think he's made any errors at 1B. But I'm fine with Diaz spending most of his time at 1B. If Dana decides to trade for an OF if he cant trade for Vlad, then I hope he uses Diaz/Singleton and Caratini in some kind of platoon situation.

If Martinez is added in a trade then Yordan should be playing LF in about 60 or so games. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

    Yup - I agree.

So the only conclusion I can reach is that they think someone like Rooker can play 1st or they intend to trade for a bat that is an OF or DH and off set the hole at first base.

I honestly don't remember - I suspect that the organization did not want to get him too comfortable at 1st.

I have assumed that they would target someone like Martinez or Rooker because they wanted to be able to roll out the best possible line up in the playoffs.

The only ones I know that they have internally discussed at first are Rooker and Gavin Sheets.

Rooker has been an outfielder - but was told he played a lot of first in college and can still play the spot.

    So IDK -

I hope they dont trade for Sheets.

Might as well just go with Singleton.

I like Rooker but not enough to pay what the A's will probably ask for to trade for Rooker.

The problem w/ Singleton is that he is just good enough to limit the candidates who are an upgrade.

Tanner Scott will be traded, the Marlins have made it clear they will deal several of their guys.

The cost of getting Tanner Scott will likely be very high based on his elite performance and the teams chasing him.

I don't think the Astros want to get into a bidding war with the Orioles - as they have the most talent in baseball under 25 years old.

If the Astros are going to pay the prospect cost for an elite set up man, they will likely target one under team control beyond this season.

There are plenty of potential players out there - and a team like the Rangers could control the outcome of the deadline if they choose to sell.

Just the Marlins, Rays, Jays, Sox and A's will likely have - Scott, Chisolm, Chronin, Y. Diaz, Lowe, V. Guerrero, Gausmann, Robert, Pham, Fedde, Crochet, Ward, Moore, Estevez, Strickland and Rooker at least available in talks.

The Rangers would have another half dozen possible candidates.

The Astros need to target in on a few and push hard.

I remember this also. I don't recall if it was the last, but I do recall catching puck off throws was an issue and he did not look natural at all. His footwork also looked unnatural.

Dubon looked that way the first few games but has improved there

I missed the prior discussions, were all our starters traded away in this scenario?
