It's honestly pathetic to me that people could sit around with trees down in their neighborhoods preventing power from being restored for damn near a week while doing nothing but complaining about it. You would think there has to be at least one man in each neighborhood who would grab a chainsaw and take care of business themselves....but so often that's not the case. So many people just choose helplessness.
What? First, you want people screwing around with chainsaws near downed power lines? Second, what makes you think that just by removing a tree that the line will magically be re-energized? It’s not like cinching a water hose.
The reason the linesmen can't restore power is due to the trees being on the power lines, thus if you remove the trees, the linesmen can get in there and restore power. So, yeah, I'd have the men of the area act like men and get the job done. Also, this isn't a hypothetical, this EXACT thing happened in the sugarland area. Nearly all of the neighborhood was restored, but one section was out due to a tree being on a downed line....so the neighborhood got together and chopped the tree up and moved it off of the lines, they then reported to Centerpoint that the tree had been removed and they had people out there the very next day fixing the line and restoring power to the last section of the neighborhood. They'd still be without power right now if they did nothing, but they didn't choose helplessness.
That seems insane. There is no guarantee that the lines were not energized, especially since the houses near the down lines were energized. If the lines were energized, you can get by shocked by standing near the line, even without touching it, especially if the ground is wet.

What kind of idiot would touch something with electrical contact on the order of many times the necessary amount to kill your whole family? source: I’ve lost family members to an electrical mishap. That’s plural because of subsequent rescue without knowing what was going on and also getting electrocuted nobody should be touching these trees except trained professionals
That's true, it's very dangerous....but lives are potentially in danger given the heat, so it falls on those who aren't cowards to step up and get the job done rather than just sitting around being worthless. The point is, SOMEONE has to do it, you can either sit around crying until help comes, or you can sack up and help yourself. We'd have died off tens of thousands of years ago as a species if the bulk of our men were as cowardly when it came to dangerous jobs that needed to be done to save the community as they are now.
By all means, defend pathetic cowardice if you feel called out. I'm not really concerned about how those types of people feel when it comes to literally anything...I'll be kicking it with the guys who grabbed some rubber boots and some rubber electricians gloves and got the ****ing job done potentially saving lives. Those are the types of people I take seriously.

The fact that you seem to think so is something of an indictment of your character. Also, as I pointed out, this wasn't a hypothetical scenario, I'm talking about something that I was part of. The power was restored the very next day because the people in that neighborhood, and those they called to help, weren't just sitting back crying about their situation, they did something about it. I know that's a foreign concept for you, but that's not my fault.

Linemen absolutely don't want dummies with chainsaws trying to clear trees off lines. For two main reasons: to keep them from being killed, and also, they re-use the existing lines if they can. Dummies with chainsaws can damage a downed line that was going to be re-pulled and hung...if it gets damaged, then you're waiting days for new line to be drawn.
LOL, I'm not a linesman or even an electrician, I just helped a group of people cut up a downed tree so the linesman could get access to fix the power lines in their neighborhood.
Or anyone that isn't a worthless coward really....but we can see there are many coward apologists in this thread.
